I simply give up within a week of not getting any responses and delete my online account. Maybe it is simply bad luck. I probably stand a better chance of winning the lottery than meeting anyone online.

I have been on Okcupid since my mid 20s and have only met a few people. One manipulated me into moving in with him then mentally and emotionally abused me for over two years.

Another just used me for sex, and I have reason to believe he was lying to me about being divorced.

And the third would talk to me for hours on the phone but had to cancel all three first dates so we decided to end it.

Went on a date with one guy off plenty of fish and he was the most arrogant, rude, immature jack@$$ I've ever met.

So in half a decade of online dating I've actually met 3 people and had a fourth cancel on me three times. Waste of time that I won't need in school. Like I said I might meet someone there or at a new job, but I sincerely doubt I'll meet a decent man online.

HMG, are you in or near a big city, or are you in a more rural location?

For me, being in an extremely rural location, online dating is probably my only option. It's also a very outdoors-oriented place that attracts a lot more young people than it does people approaching retirement age, so the "pool" of singles my age in my area is woefully small.

So you're kind of in the same boat. How far are you from a big city? Isn't Atlanta only a couple hours away?

The closest big city to me is about a four-hour drive - much too far for a casual date.

Below average looking guys like me have absolutely nothing to lose. Anything must be better than nothing or is it better not bothering at all?
