It's possible that one or the other are tricking him, but it's not very probable. Many people have online friendships/relationships and a huge number of real world friendships/relationships begin online these days before people meet in person. Typically it's with someone that lives near them, but not always.
And just because someone is from Egypt does not make them a terrorist that's plotting anything against America. I think your tinfoil hat might be on a little bit too tight.
