And oh, hale_bopp, when are you gonna build my long awaited idol? Make sure it's made of marshmallow.

8) oddly enough this was the song a friend and I used to sing making fun of my boyfriend (and her ex-boyfriend)...he was indeed a boy from NYC, tall, rich, willing and able to throw (his father's) money around on women, did not have a flash car but had a friend with a flash car (and very uncomfortable it was, too)...also his own mother described him as a pathological liar, and he was headache-inducingly closeted, also arrested on felony charges, also on his way to throwing away his daddy's fortune. I didn't marry him, thought it'd be a bad match. (That was before the felony charges.)

I can't remember the lyrics we made up...something to do with his utter unreliability. Excellent song though.

eta: no mohair suits, but hella fine wardrobe anyhow, and I'm sure it was his everlasting regret that he hadn't a duelling scar. Super dancer. Will one day inherit a very beautiful apartment.

All that yet he was your boyfriend , and you are not gonna convince me that you didn't see what kind of richy boy he was in the first phase of dating, before you took the decision to become his girlfriend. Yes, I dated women who turned out to be such total jerks but none ever reached the girlfriend level.

Whoa! tarantella, you were a perfect stereotype example of a woman who liked to date jerks (real jerks). Either that, or you liked him for his height and riches, another stereotypical accusation .

Actually I liked him despite his height. I'm pretty short, don't really enjoy dating tall guys who're twice my size, feels a bit interspecies. I did dig his moves on the dance floor, though. As it happened he was also the brightest and funniest guy in the dorm. The money was definitely a cool novelty for a while, and fun, but not why I dated him. We were friends for a year before we took up, had a very intense connection, and back then I didn't know he was rich, had never been to his parents' apartment. And yes, he was a real jerk. Beyond a real jerk. Something decidedly not right in the head. Unfortunately that seems to be pretty common amongst very bright guys.

Too bad, really, the whole thing. We were together for years, always rocky, but there was just this assumption that we'd stick, and something just told me not to say yes to marrying him. Lucky break there. He tried getting back in touch a while ago -- this is, what, almost 30 years after we dated -- and I told him what kind of changes he'd have to make before I even considered being friends with him again. I messaged him recently, though, with condolences after his dad died, and he was well-behaved about it, didn't try to use it to get back in touch.

As it turned out his father was abusive, some very cruel stuff. His mom told me the stories after the guy died. And a few years ago I read something about sexual abuse in NYC prep schools that was just...it was like he sat up and started talking from the page. Had never occurred to me before. I don't think all the craziness was stuff he came up with himself.

Aww, he's really complicated and full of bad and good traits, with a mysterious past, probably that what makes him interesting.

Hmm, interesting.

Well, Boo and several people here like to post about women liking the following in men:

Tall
Rich
Willing to spend money on women
Flash Cars
Your own apartment.

This woman is pretty much singing about how she loves all these about a guy. :P

I know you're going to tell me that I'm the exception and am old and past it anyway so who cares, but ...

I have never dated a rich guy. I have dated a short guy. No fancy cars. They've all had their own places, although some have been in housing. And liking to buy me stuff varies, but ill take it if offered.

I really think you guys are being unrealistic about this. Obviously some women are like this, but some men are superficial too. You're hanging out with the wrong people.

Don't worry about it.

We guys have "Brick House", by the Commadores to make US look crass!

("with a 36,24,36,...what a winning hand! She's [built like] a brick house!") :D

Like "the Boy From NYC" its a kick ass song.

And like that song you're not supposed to think about the lyrics too much.
