The thing about sex is it's NOT a big deal?it's just sex, as someone else has already mentioned. What sucks about it not being a big deal is that only people who've had it know that.
What's funny about sex as a human need is on some Maslow models it does appear on the same level as food/water and shelter. As has already been mentioned, it's only required for procreation. Truth be told, if sex is all you care about, that can be had on the cheap. If you really want it bad enough, it's not terribly difficult to get someone to sleep with you. .
The REAL trick is sexual intimacy. I believe that's on the next Maslow level. But it's not a base need, and without satisfying those base, you have bigger fish to fry than enjoying a certain level of intimacy that isn't directly related to survival. You're not going to reach that level (intimacy) unless you're in a pretty deep, meaningful relationship already, and I think from most of the WP responses I've seen, THAT is really the void most people are struggling to fill.
In Freudian language, it's tied to a need many people have to feel important, which we can get by dominating someone, having someone else satisfy those urges for us (i.e. by taking a passive role), or otherwise realize some position of power through making someone else happy/fulfilling needs or urges (i.e. men with a "ladies first" attitude). I'll be honest?I'm a "ladies first" kind of guy, and I enjoy the feeling of having earned some kind of "bragging rights" by getting certain responses from women. I win when YOU win. A relationship based on shared power like that, I think, is going to be the most successful and longest-lived relationship. In my view, sex is really nothing but an allegory, a sort of ritual as to how your overarching world view plays out in the outside world.
To sum it all up: It's not about actual physical intimacy, but more about how you get "there," how other people get you "there," and how much enjoyment you get out of getting other people "there." And, btw, "there" is different for everyone. Could be sex. Could be a job. Could be academic performance. Could be a hobby. Doesn't matter.
Personally, I think a preoccupation with sex happens more frequently within a bored mind. People who are out there actually having sex are not really the sort of people who are all that concerned about it. There's just more to life than that.
I really think you do better waiting until marriage before going there. I'm not saying I'm perfect or pure as driven snow, but I certainly could have made better decisions. If there are more important things out there for you and you're not that concerned about physical intimacy, you are not far from enlightenment.
