Thats basically it.
The Romans conquered the Celts in what is now France, and England. The Germanic barbarian tribes beyond the Rhine and the Danube stayed free of Roman rule. The Scandanavians are an offshoot of the Germanic tribes. So yes Norse is a subset of "Germanic".
Then centuries later when the Roman Empire started to collapse the Germanic Angles and Saxons invaded the part of what had been Roman Britain (the south east) closest to Netherlands and Germany, and pushed the Celts westward into what is now Wales, and western Britain, Scotland, and Ireland. The invading Germanic Angles and Saxons became "the English" the Celts became the modern Scots, Irish, Welsh, and Breton (in part of France). Hense the common pantheon of pagan Gods in England Germany and Scandanavia.
Later still (after the Pagan gods had been abandoned for Christianity) England was raided by the Vikings, and the Danish Vikings almost conquered England, but then got reabsorbed by the Anglo Saxons when Alfred the Great reconquered the Danelaw. So the English are a mix of both mainland and Scandanavian branches of the Germanic folks.
Then Britain got conquered AGAIN by the Norman French. So the English language is a mix of Germanic based Anglo Saxon, and Germanic based Norse, and Latin based French.
