Girls think I'm very attractive, but I almost never get messages or replies at OKC. Looks certainly aren't everything.

Even if they were, how am I supposed to reply to a message that just says "ur cute! :)"??

This is just me, but I would never ever take my family's advice on anything because they're all so clueless. Like my parents still insist that I was naturally gifted at playing the violin when I was in grade school. I wasn't - I completely sucked at it - I could not even read the music - but their perception was through the lens of parents, who see that their child can do no wrong and is ALWAYS special and talented. So not exactly the best judge of character, or in this case, what may be appropriate.

And yet when I refuse my parent's advice to be a mindless robot, you are ready to kill me.

Being personally responsible for your own life is not being a mindless robot, Mark. Having a job and being self-sufficient and accountable for your actions does not equal playing a musical instrument because your parents want you to.

My mother doesn't even want me to have a full time job. She actually thinks I will lose my medicaid and she won't be able to control me. She's admitted to me that she is a control freak. My father just thinks I need to stay in my room and find an internet job. If that isn't telling me to be a robot, I don't know what is. My parents also don't want me to play an instrument. Where did you get the idea that they want me to?

Your posts just tell me you don't want me to have a girlfriend because you think I am "f****d up".

I hate my appearance. I go to work because I have to, but if it weren't for that reason, I'd be a hermit. I work out because I enjoy it and I want to stay in shape, but I feel that regardless of how I dress or how much in shape I get, nothing can be done for my facial hideousness, and it's come to a point where I am convinced that I'm facially disfigured and as ugly as an Orc. The lack of responses when I tried online dating attest to this. The fact that guys that (I thought) are ugly have girlfriends or are married only reinforces my ugliness. I feel that if I approach with any dating interest, she will either a) laugh and walk away or b) call the police.

This hits home for me, because I felt the same way for most of my young life. I struggled with dating, and women acted like I was the ugliest turd they've ever seen. A waitress at a trendy restaurant even said to her colleague, which I overheard: "That guy. [that's me] Look at his eyes! Ugh! Ew!" At one point, when I was 20 or 21, I even went to a plastic surgeon for a consultation. Unfortunately, he told me it'd cost $10,000 plus aftercare costs, and have 6 weeks of recovery time. I didn't have that much money or time to spare. I must have looked really upset, because he had pity on me, and waived the $50 consultation fee he was going charge me.

I started to look better around age 29, because that's when my success with dating improved a little, although by then, I probably aged into my looks. For a year or two after I broke up with my girlfriend in 2013, I had a lot of fun. Women were reacting really well to me, and acted more affectionate with me than ever before. Just friendly affection, like full-body hugs and light cuddles, but it was a breath of fresh air compared to how I was treated for most of my 20's. Sadly, I also started getting gray hair and bald spots, and lost two teeth. Today, I have no interest in dating, because most women my age (mid 30's) are hyperfocused on marriage and getting pregnant.

The OP's situation is actually a little better than mine. Generally speaking, 40-something women are less baby-focused than 30-something women. They either already had a kid, or gave up on the idea altogether. And the ones who want a kid are usually honest about it at that age. So at least he doesn't have to worry as much about being pregnancy-trapped. Notice I didn't say "not worry at all".

This isn’t uncommon. I feel like that when I talk to anyone.Feeling like a disgusting, hopeless “thing” is more common than you think.

Lots of apparently ugly people do okay. Social skills help a lot. I was at a party tonight and a guy who wasn’t much to look at at all was confident and gave a great conversation, for that reason alone, he was appealing. It really isn’t all about looks.

None of the people here would ever admit it, but it’s not their looks, it’s their lack of social skills. Unless you’re short, then it’s probably your height. Short men have it worse than men who are ugly.

At 5'8" (1.73 m), I consider myself short.

You're not short at 5'8''

Most women feel uncomfortable dating a man who is shorter than them, that's why it can be a big disadvantage. You are definitely taller than most women.
