He was leaning out of the window, looking directly in my eyes and smiling a little. I think he wanted to say more, but I was being reserved.

I think he might have been testing the waters instead of directly expressing interest if that makes any sense.

Possible testing, yes. Without having observed, unfortunately, it's hard to confirm. Most men start by testing, not diving right in.

He was quite attractive and had an expensive but outdoorsy type of car.

I wasn’t looking my best last night. I’ll say that much. It’s also hard to feel particularly desirable when one is carrying a dog’s poop bag. :P

I don’t believe anybody is out of anybody’s “league.”

I hate that concept.

I don’t like it, either, but lots of people think that way.

My read on this is that he only cares about breeding the dog. He is probably arrogant enough not to care whether the situation made you uncomfortable. Also I suspect you live in a semi-rural area where people may have less fear of strangers, in comparison with Queens NY. Although they probably should.

I don't think "league" is the applicable word, but I do believe in a version of the concept: E.g.: I see a man on a dating website who has lots of artsy black & white pics of himself. I know those types are too high maintenance for me, so I don't bother. I've gotten expressions of interest from guys who love wine, fine dining, dancing, painted toenails, and a lady in a little black dress. I've written back that I'm too low maintenance for them! I dated both types at one point or another so I already know how it'll turn out.

My gut feeling tells me that you really wished that he was interested and asked you out.

Twilight, a whole thread just for a random chatter? C'mon

Your “gut feeling” is wrong.

I didn’t intend for this thread to just be about this one experience as you should be able to tell from the title of the thread and my initial post.

I’ve had friends tell me in the past that I don’t pick up on flirting very well.

A couple years ago my girlfriend was walking home alone from somewhere & a guy in a van drove up along side of her on the sidewalk. A new apartment complex was being built along that road & he was in work van so he was very likely part of the construction crew. The guy made it very obvious he found her attractive & wanted to have sex with her. When she told him she had a boyfriend, the guy said "He doesn't have to know". She was almost home so she took the backway in so he couldn't see which apartment/unit she lived at which I think was smart thinking just in case.
The only other time she was aware of a guy coming on to her offline was when she was also walking alone on the sidewalk & a guy walking by also made it obvious he found her attractive. He was a lot more respectful & she didn't get the creep vibe from him.
My girlfriend is fairly good at reading people even thou she's probably on the spectrum & those are the only times she's been aware of anyone coming on to her offline. There was also one case of a guy who used to stare at her a lot when she went to church(she quit going after she moved here with me) & she strongly suspected he was on the spectrum or something & liked her but he couldn't make a move & she's shy & has anxiety issues too so she never made a move even if she would of been willing to give him a chance.

reminder it's dangerous being a woman

Males rarely want to be "just friends" with attractive young women

Although my grandfather once told me "Gentleman seldom make passes at ladies with glasses"

Actually....it's usually the other way around LOL

Girls with glasses DO get passes

(at least from me :P )

There was an advert in the 1970s which said just that (yes, of course it was from an optical company LOL)

There used to be quite a bit of bias against people who wore glasses; and people who wore glasses (me included) were bullied unmercifully.

These days, though, glasses have a sort of a "chic" thing about them.....

I bet the “being attractive” and “owning an expensive and outdoory car” will be justified as a direct reflection of a “good” personality, in some minds.

I think he was trying to pick you up. Talking about the dog is a common pick up line. Most nice guys would realise that it is quite threatening to stop and talk to girls on their own in an alley. But he didn't hurt you and I am relieved. Twilight your are a very beautiful girl and you need to be less trusting. "I am wagging my finger at you!!
