My first date happened accidentally. It was the 11th grade, she was one of my best friends, we were both aware we liked each other, but she wasn't interested in a relationship.
I asked her if she wanted to go to the movies, intending it to be a "just friends" thing, but she, her family, my family, and our mutual friends misinterpreted it.
So I thought okay, cool, I just asked someone out for the first time. I wouldn't have had the guts at that point to do it intentionally.
We did the whole movie and dinner thing, which I had promised myself I wouldn't do on a first date (too cliche) but it was quite nice.
We started dating shortly after that.

As my wife of 22 years will attest, I have never been on any dates, only appointments. So I will instead respond in the spirit of my 'first interactions' with those of the female gender.

- as a senior football letterman, I felt compelled to attend the homecoming dance. A sophomore girl asked me to dance. I curtly declined and immediately left.

- later that year I attended a scholarship competition in a different city. There was a girl there needing a ride home to a city near mine so I gave her one. Later I called her up and took her to a drive in to watch a Chuck Norris movie. It seemed to me that she was interested in continuing our new relationship which was frightening enough to make me never communicate with her again.

- my first year in college, a good friend of mine who had met a girl to whom he was eventually to get married, switched schools after the first semester. He asked me to look after his girlfriend, and we spent quite a bit of time together, but certainly those weren't dates.

- one summer in college I noticed a girl in a psych class that I was taking. She inspire me to write a poem entitled 'Silence is Golden'. When I gave it to her she looked like I was from a different planet.

- at one point I actually had enough 'appointments' with a girl that she asked me whether I would like to kiss her. I remember that our teeth seemed to knock into one another and that I didn't find kissing to be a very enjoyable experience, so I never did it again until...

- finally I was to meet a woman with a captivating smile and wonderful spirit. Despite the quirkiness of my relational style, she seemed to genuinely enjoy being with me. Although we didn't 'date', but only had appointments, in my senior year as I was preparing to sign up for the GRE, I decide that instead I would get married. It has been a difficult time, but after having a few sons with 'quirkiness' my wife found out about AS. Since that time, I think we have both been able to learn more about how to relate to one another.
