A live rose (as opposed to a plastic one) and a love poem/sweet poem (if you're friends) about her you wrote yourself. Simple and meaningful. Out there is good, but there is also a lot going for traditional too. My advice is to have a bit of both.

The poem doesn't have to be all "my love for you is as boundless as the ocean" crap, it could just be simple and relevant like "I love it when you smile, your laugh makes me laugh" etc

If you have that much incidental cash on hand and she'll love it, go for it...

i was trying to present a "joke".

if i bought her a TV that she could only watch at my place, then i have really bought myself the TV. i include the justification of altruism by saying it is for her to watch when she comes over.

i do not know how it is funny now, but it made me laugh when i thought of it.

seriously, i am going to get her an air conditioner (that she can use in my bedroom if she gets hot) for valentines day.

^^how about a sports car that you could drive her around with?

the only valentines day gift that I would be happy to receive would be no gift at all and/or joining in my boycott (i.e. stayin in all day wearing PJs, drinking whisky, being extremely rude plus a slasher movie marathon)

I was thinking about sending a guidebook on the Katy Trail (this epic bike trail she's talked about taking a weekend to explore), as well as some cookies from my own recipe. I figure the book is a good, practical gift that would last long, and the cookies would be a more traditional "indulgent" gift, albeit one more personal than store bought candy. We're not a couple, so this is an attempt for me to court from afar, so to speak. So I'm going for something not too overtly romantic, but one that makes my intent fairly clear.

Then, I would include a note saying something to the effect of: "I couldn't decide between something useful, or totally indulgent, so I did both."

What do you all think?

Hehehe, that's the spirit. She can stop over and play Gears of War anytime she wants as well ;)

I think an even better way to handle the gift idea, the most important buying guideline is make your choice of gift on the basis of what the relationship is and what makes it good. If you buy a gift with the aim of improving the relationship through the gift and its too far out in left field not to be obvious - that's a problem (ie. get a gift that shows your awareness of you as a couple rather than anything that specifically makes her feel like your just thoughtlessly buying her off).

i got her a mercedes 560 sel to pick her up from her house in a few years ago.

i know what my valentines gift to her will be this year. i have thought very carefully about it.

she does not have much money and she will be financially stressed to buy me a gift. so my present to her will be a low interest loan to ease her burden.

Frankly, the only gift I feel like giving a woman at this time of year is a punch to the face.

I bought my girlfriend a day planner, and at random days wrote a love quote or something similar in it. secondly, she does not know this, on valentines day I will arrive early with breakfast and a cup of coffee. She is a morning person

maybe you should be getting a jail sentence as a valentine's gift, or a beating from people who don't like cowardly men who beat women.
