Do you think it is appropriate to laugh at how small the bill at what appears to be a nice restaurant?

Scenario:

No appetizer, no drinks, two people and it was only $40. Since I'm expecting to pay more than that for me, is it inappropriate to laugh?

it can be interpreted as a laugh of relief that the cost is not as expensive as once thought.

Me too. But it's a date. As long as the two meals are less than $200, I'm not worried. (Not that I can do that every week. After all, I am partially Scottish.)
