I could, hypothetically, invite a girl to come with me to grab takeout so we can eat on campus, and then time it so that we arrive just in time for my meetings with my senior project team, and try to continue with the "date" and do work for the team at the same time: just continue eating in fancy attire right at the lab computers.
That would be like killing two birds with one stone: Tick off my GF (who I don't have yet) AND my senior project team.

What about a traffic island?
If you set up two chairs and a table on a traffic island that would be very romatic. 
One with some very noisy diesel fumed trucks would be good as well.

Sadly enough, that would be my idea of an awesome (awesome because it's interesting and different and you can observe all kinds of interesting stuff) date - so you fail there.

When I arrange get-togethers with friends (I hate going out on dates, so I tend to avoid them/get out of them in any way I can) I always try to figure out something interesting and different to do. Some of the things I thought up:
Dressing up as extreme emos (with full on black mascara and tears painted on our faces) and parading around the local shopping centre while glaring at people, to see what peoples reactions would be.
Carrying a steaming hot tea pot full of tea and cups all the way out to the University lakes in the middle of the night and sitting and drinking tea on a small slope above the footpath, while people returning from clubbing stared at us.
Sitting on the carpet in my college room drinking tea and listening to classical music.
Rolling down the hill above the road.
Playing guitar and singing on the grass in the middle of uni, again in the middle of the night.
Drinking treacle shots.
Singing operatic harmonies at the top of our voices to the dance music at clubs.
Playing hide and seek.
Lying on the grass and staring at the sky.
Climbing trees.
And my all time favourite: "Pen wars". I'll even post a picture of me after I lost miserably (I had crazy hair because earlier in the night I had dressed up as a peasant).
As you can see from the marks on my arms and legs, I was owned - and that's a REAL get-together/date/whatever. Who really wants to go and meet up at some fancy restaurant/see a movie? Boooring.
