Things still are still pretty sh***y for black people even here in Queens. Last I heard, there's still plenty of discrimination against black people by landlords and realtors. And most of the black neighborhoods are seriously inconvenient in terms of access to supermarkets, banks, etc. -- a relic of the days of "redlining."

A white person working at Rite-Aid (do we have ANY Walmarts around here???) doesn't gain much if any benefit from this situation, but is still better off in some ways, such as being less likely to be hassled by cops (at least until VERY recently, maybe).

I’ve never denied that things are pretty sh***y sometimes for black people in Queens. I’d be an idiot if I denied this.

Minorities are certainly hassled more by cops than white people…..though I’ve been hassled by cops. I was almost arrested once for “running while white in a black neighborhood.” I was running. I never went into a building, period, while I was accused of running into a building to buy drugs. I had to show work ID. If I had no ID, I would have been arrested.

Idiots or not, quite a few white people do deny this, or make excuses for it, or just don't care. Would it be fair to say that those white people are blinded by (relative) privilege?

Yikes! How long ago did this happen to you?

I personally have never (yet) been hassled by cops, but I am aware that autistic people are another category of people who are disproportionately likely to get harassed by cops, due to unusual body language.

Yes…those people are blinded, yes, to reality.

This happened about 1995-1996 by Prospect Park in Brooklyn—the “bad side” of it, in Flatbush.

I was also taken into a police van once in Downtown Brooklyn, circa 1988-1989, because there was a “bulge” in my sweatpants. My keys were mistaken for a gun.

Oh thanks. I just hope she won't leave me over some somewhat political differences, or that she will not drive me to leave her over it. I just want to be able to agree to disagree, even if the issues are not that different for both of us I feel.

Perhaps. In what way though likely? I didn't think anything changed on my end.

I'm also trying to understand her perspective on this too. For example, she has a problem with white privileged people to a degree it seems, but she says she doesn't like the trucker convoy protesters, because they are white and privileged according to her.

But they are truckdrivers. How are people with blue collar truck driving jobs, who have to unload in the freezing cold winter, privileged? And the driver's are protesting against not only the vaccine mandate but other crappy working conditions made by their companies as well. Makes me wonder why she sets the bar for what counts as privileged, so low...
