Oh ... the horror.

I'll tell you, for most (all?) of my eight-year marriage, my wife considered herself overweight. (I always wondered, over-what-weight?) She just couldn't accept herself as she was; and worse, she couldn't accept me for accepting her as she was. She always doubted my feelings for her. Eating disorders, dangerous diets, all sorts of mood-altering pills, and several weightloss surgeries later, she was still a "failure." And so was our marriage. Her body image, which led to horrible self-esteem, wreaked havoc on our relationship. It was far from the sole cause of our breakup, but it certainly contributed. I like to think that I was really there for her in this regard, but it took a toll on me, too. I really felt like being supportive, accepting, encouraging was enough. I just got sooo frustrated that I couldn't seem to come up with the grand gesture that was going to make her weight issues disappear for her -- if not physically, then at least mentally. But, it was never enough. I saw her last week, and she looks great. She's lost weight (not enough, of course), and she has a new boyfriend (who she believes must think she's too fat). So sad...

Anyway, sorry for the downer of a story. But friends, this is what we're doing as a society to perfectly wonderful, lovable women. I think a few people who participated in this thread would probably do well to reconsider some of the things they posted.

Sadly, this is not likely to change anytime soon. The weight loss industry makes so much money on women who are trying to attain that perfect image and things don't die out until they are no longer profitable.

Right, and the better women start to feel about themselves, the more aggressive the advertising becomes.

Yup. I hate seeing weight-loss ads everywhere. It also doesn't help when my closest friends have society-approved bodies and don't understand why I don't like shopping for clothes with them. They can all wear clothes from the juniors department and I'm stuck looking at grandma clothes in the plus size section. >.<

Aww, I would shop with you but I'd end up grabbing the first decent thing I saw and sticking in your cart... then rushing you to the register.

I really hate shopping. lol

I like shopping but I hate trying clothes on as I always end up leaving very frustrated and depressed because clothes aren't made for girls like me. The ones that are look really ugly and not age appropriate for me.

They make clothes for women of all sizes, what do you think big and tall stores are for!

I have trouble finding clothes that fit me as well as I have big shoulders but skinny arms and not a huge chest

If you aren't a woman, you don't get it. Period.

Um...men.

If you were a Crayon, you'd be the brown one.

I have been tempted to shop at the "Big Lady" stores because of problems I have had with buying pants at normal stores. Im a size 12 to 14, but my lower quarters are weirdly shaped and the stores are full of skinny jeans... :? which I didnt even suit when I was thin anyway...

Skinny jeans flatter nobody.

I get boot cut jeans from Wal-Mart.

I like bootcut jeans. I read that the stores are starting to stock them again.. though the fittings were weird when I tried on pants a few weeks ago. It was like dressmakers had decided that people were to have skinny little toothpick legs.

I had that problem with all the brands except for one at Wal-Mart. Now the only problem I face is having a size 14 ass and hips and a size 12 waist.

To the person who talked about tummy getting in the way of shoes: Try putting them on when your in bed just put one leg on the bed and take care of that foot then swap to the other.

Actually that sounds like a great idea. :)

I recall a girl I used to work with. She was short, little over 5 feet, small framed, had a average size "top" for her size, but a very big "bottom", she was a beautiful pear shape. She had wide hips, big thighs, and a huge round booty. She had a beautiful face too. Her face actually looked kind of like Bethie's face, except with brown hair. We were taking the one time and she said she had a lot of trouble finding jeans for her bodacious "bottom" because jeans would ride down because of how small her waist is and how big her "bottom" is. She said that skinny jeans don't fit her properly.

But then I recall someone telling me they do make "big butt" jeans for women, but they are expensive.

Sounds a lot like me. My jeans were always too long because I had to choose between them going over my enormous @ss and them being short enough.

I gave up long ago. Long hippie skirts are very forgiving, and comfy. :)

My figure is a little odd because my hips are wide, but with smaller thighs. The majority of my weight gain is on my torso.
