I dunno, I can't speak for other people, but what someone does for work wouldn't be a factor (within reason, like if I was morally against it) in whether I got to know someone.

The rest you said just sounds kinda like myself so a ASD thing? Ehh...

I think there's widespread subconscious bias against the complexity of work such as mine.

I would figure a kind of envy rather than a bias. Complex work requires certain skills and intelligence, and that isn't something everyone has. Not that they can't be or aren't proficient in other things but it's a bit like, the grass Is always greener on the other side. Plus I've found when others identify someone they think may be smarter than them they take on a feeling of being threatened.

I'm sad regarding the common impulse that we all need to add something to ourselves to be socially acceptable.

I think most people feel crummy about that facet but most are too insecure to not take part of it. We have a pretty superficial society/culture and events like Red Carpet fanfare speak to that.

I feel like the invasive advertising & misleading brands on offer from "cloud" technology companies completely obscure what my life is really like. The "corporations = people" mentality is freaking awful for a goofy person who's trying to avoid coming off as too businesslike.

I tell my friends all the time that tech isn't all it's cracked up to be. I had to give up more or less my entire life to get enough homework done to get my job. Perhaps my friends understand as much but my family certainly doesn't. I've learned to expect everyone resenting my opinions on these things.

There is no cloud. It's just a blob.

Being sufficiently alone to do lots of serious work is a luxury to many of us. I kind of view my work machines as phantom limbs; they're arranged in my head & on my desk. I'm a hermit. I'm going to do the dumb thing & go hang out at my friends' in town before my 7:30am meetings because I owe it to certain people to retain my ability to interact with people at all.

I wonder if that's what this song is about.

You sound like a pretty social person, cberg.

Is programming fulfilling you?

It can but it's not likely to do so today. Normally I'm actually an engineering software QA tester, today though I must rewrite some Python. Or not. I prefer hacking & scripting to programming in most cases. I don't really write much code, I'm more into what it all does.

I left the office in order to run some errands & I'm not sure I'll do anything more. I need to take an actual break before I'm honestly prepared.

Who am I kidding? I need more time around people who know me before I'm actually ready for anything at all. My ability as a coder is limited by my ability to relax (or not).

Whhhaat? Are you telling me there isn't a magical room with a bunch of fluffy clouds floating around with our data in them?!

I think a lot of people don't really care what's behind the scene they just want the fun stuff they get from all the nose grinding of someone else. So... maybe they see you as killing their buzz. lol

Well, all work and no play can make Jack a dull boy. So there's no harm in doing what you need to in order to be 'productive'

A couple of years ago, I was seriously looking into coding, looking up Ruby on Rails tutorials online etc. I can see the excitement and functionality of both coding and hacking. The idea of creating awesome apps particularly appeals to me.

It is a stressful job, though, so I understand about your need to decompress. The time you spend away from the keyboard will enrich your creative mind and help you unlock solutions in programming.

When you say 'ready for anything', what are you referring to?

Hypervigilance, for lack of a better guess. The stress keeps me on my toes, which in itself is familiar. I've had far more stressful jobs before so there's something of a dangerous precondition.

Part of all these technical disciplines for me is expecting myself to absorb all the necessary info before I even realize I'm done studying. I'm trying to avoid applying my absurd standards to loved ones.

It was quite surprising to me to find out how there so many people out there who have no clue nor the least idea what a programmer/developer does, nor about software development, maybe because I always knew what it is even way before my career shift to serious programming.

Concrete example of a chat:
-What do you do?
- I am a programmer
- What does this mean?
- Programmer... I develop applications, software.
- Like how?
- You see all these apps on your phone, even the websites you browse? It’s the programmers who create them.
-Ohh I see.

They probably think it’s the devise that makes the apps, I dunno.

Everyone understands what doctors do, even those who have no idea about biology, but for some reason Programmers are unknown soliders. The society overall doesn’t appreciate them much, they are just a bunch of “geeks”, despite their creations are part of everyone’s daily life.

Programming is more abstract than doctoring.....that's why people understand "doctoring" better than "programming."

Biology however is vastly more abstract than any of this.

No, but because doctors work with people, the people see them.

Programmers on the other hand are out of the sight.

Medicine has been around for millennia and is a regular part of traditional life. That's why there's such a thing as folk medicine but not folk programming.

Sure we have that! It's called hacking.
