Interesting quote. Where does it come from?

I forget where it came from. I saw it on a liberal forum I was on for a while, in reference to the Bush family (the generations in this case being Prescott bush, George HW, and then of course W)

POF is good if you're looking for hookups. But I'm not. I'm likely the only guy in his early 20s that wants a family...

No popular site can run on donations alone. Donations and ads? Maybe. Investors and ads? Definitely, with a pile of cash on the side. I know which I'd choose ;)

A dating site is just a profile and messaging system, ads could be sold to cover systems costs, but donations would work as well.

Storing loads of messages and pictures, and providing bandwidth to handle a large number of visitors isn't cheap. Then there need to be people to fix bugs, monitor the servers, provide customer support, etc.

Sure, you can run a site off a cheap hosting plan, and that'd work while its small, but if it starts to gather any kind of real attention, it needs to be run by dedicated servers, which don't come cheap.

It isn't as easy as you appear to believe.

Of course not I never said it was easy, but big donation run sites are possible ala wiki. So I don't see how you can claim no popular(traffic heavy) sites can be run on donations.

Wikipedia is a very rare exception. If you look at other high traffic websites, you'll see that the vast majority are run on investor money and/or ads. Look at Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, eBay, and, hell, even Wrong Planet - WP is funded by ads and Autism Speaks these days

And? Wikimedia is exceptional but not because of some inherent greatness its success is likely repeatable, it is unlikely but in business exceptions are made not dictated by circumstance.

I think this thread is getting derailed. It was supposed to be about OKcupid getting bought by Match.com.

Indeed it is.

My final say on the matter of running a high traffic site from donations is simply that it's a hard thing to pull off, and I know of only one site which has. On the whole of the internet.

I will now stop hi-jacking the thread.

I hope it stays free. It will probably be my only way of getting relationships at this point since the men in my area are bigoted racists and/or high school dropouts. :/
