i don't personally care about prom, i just don't like when members diss other people's cultural traditions. it is important to some people on the board, and putting stuff down like that comes across like making fun of someone's ethnic lunch at school.

i've never seen Borat. i heard about his stunts and thought Sasha Baron-Cohen sounded mean with his act. plus his brother infuriates me.

Well I'm not a rapper and I'm not dissing the culture of anyone, I'll gladly admit things like the Royal Ascot are silly and fun. Sacha Baron Cohen is very blunt and inapproriate in his acts and of course he does things to stir a reaction or controversy but that's what makes him famous, certain people see the funnier side of it and certain people don't.

I've also had conversations with American girls where we poke fun at each others slang, accents or translation of words and that's just light hearted fun. Supposedly I speak posh and I can sound even posher and that can be funny in a light hearted way, I'll gladly admit there are plenty of cockney and English words I find funny.

I haven't met anyone who takes themselves or their culture that seriously, I have no idea why this is turning into a food argument now, I couldn't care less if someone likes tea and scones or a kebab after a night out.

you may not care about kebabs or scones, but prom seems to be an area of concern for you because you have put it down on WP twice.

erm, last i checked you don't have to be a rapper to say "diss".

the lunch statement was an analogy. do you really not understand why it isn't very nice to put down an aspect of someone else's culture?

I absolutely can't understand why you are so sensitive about the tradition when I've posted a video of Harvard Law students, some of the brightest students in the United States poking fun at it and having a silly spoof.

There isn't anything malicious about it, it's just light hearted and fun rivalry, I've shared quite a bit of friendly banter with Americans and I think the cultural comparsions are interesting. As someone I thought was a liberal person, I'm surprised you have taken offence and I don't really understand why you are acting sensitive, there's a difference between burning a flag out of malice and making light hearted jokes about cultural differences with people.

As I have said, there are plenty of things in England I can find funny and amusing. If I'm with someone of another culture, I'll bring up cultural comparisons and say some English cockney accents and slang words such as "bloody good diamond geezer" or the more posher accents. I haven't ever met anyone that has been offended or taken great offence, if anything, people find it light hearted.

it wasn't really lighthearted when you said it - perhaps it was your wording. it didn't seem at all like you were joking. here is your post again:

I'm glad I'm from England and most places don't really have a prom here but like a few tacky American traditions, it has started to appear in the UK in a few places. The limos and dresses are tacky and remind me more of a gypsy wedding.

it sounds like you have a problem with several american cultural traditions, in fact.

i couldn't care less about prom, but you should know that if you call another country's traditions "tacky", i'll definitely point out that it is not very nice. because i do care about that.

Proms are not tacky. It's a good way for kids to feel that they're moving on to being adults. Of course, a lot of bad things happen after it. But that's where parents come in.

Regarding the picture, I think it's just a kid making fun of himself. He's just a kid being a kid.

The topic picture looks like it could be a photo one might find in a yearbook annual; a pose for a joke.

The kid doesn't look sad at all. Looks like he's having as much fun as the couple behind him. Nor is it unusual at all for someone to joke around like this at a high school social function. He probably has a healthy level of self-confidence to joke around like that.

Another example here, for someone most are likely familar with:

Image

That one's a little more unusual, and doesn't seem funny to me, but the young man in the photo obviously thought it was; "different strokes for different folks". High school is a time for exploration, and social events are an important part of that exploration. The guy in this picture likes himself alot, from what I've read and understand of him. :)

In the grandscheme of highschool life, neither behavior is that unusual; it is brought to our attention through photography. That is the first example that I have seen of a picture like the second one in any highschool yearbook anywhere, or even the largest yearbook, facebook. I think there is a reason for that. The first picture is vanilla, in comparison.

Just in case anyone doesn't recognize the second picture, it is our projected Republican nominee to run for President. Ahead of his time; paving new ground as an attention seeker.

That wasn't my reply, this was my reply below:

It's Mitt Romney, in the picture; can you find any evidence anywhere that he doesn't like himself alot?

Yes, and most politicians do evidence themselves as liking themselves alot, particularly that one. That was what the smile was about at the end of my statement in that post. My humor, if perceived as such, is pretty dry. :)

I was hoping my last paragraph in that post, would provide clarity, for that dry humor, if one didn't recognize Romney as a youth in the picture and/or see the dry humor. It appears it didn't. Sorry about that. :)

mmm...so it's perfectly ok for you "diss" to the celebration of Saint David's Day like you did back in March in PPR?
May be you should practice what you preach!

no, i didn't do that.

and you need to stop attacking me with your strange ideas. you have an unauthorised sockpuppet account, but it is ridiculously obvious that you are cdfox7. you attacked me with your prior account as well, and it is getting tiresome.

no, i was not visiting you with an astral projection in my sleep, i did not have a secret crush on you, and i did not have a conspiracy of moderators that edited your past posts. you need to let go of some of your paranoid fantasies about me, please.
