Beyond legal constraints, I think you really need to consider maturity factors. I had a relationship with an 18-year-old when I was 34. Yes, I know, huge age difference-- I am so embarrassed about it now! It was no good, because he still thought like a child, and I'd already experienced a lot of life-- we just couldn't relate. It ended after only 6 months. There is also the fact that, hello, the older one is going to someday seem really old to the younger one, and then there's the inevitable setting in of "what was I thinking?!"

I am not sure it is just a question of numbers .A 16 year age gap wouldn't be quite so daunting depending on the people involved and their respective ages.An 18 year old fresh out of high school dating a 34 year old likely has a big gap in regards to life experiences but let's say a 25 year old dating a 41 year old is kind of a different scenario entirely. People have different expectations regarding relationships, not everyone is looking for a long term relationship .As in most things I think people should use their own intuition .If you are highly attracted to someone and they seem to reciprocate that interest why let age get in the way of what might be a great relationship, even if it doesn't turn into a long term relationship.

I am chronologically 27, but emotionally much more like 13 or 14. Therefore, my lower limit is 18. Though I find lots of women 40+ to be incredibly attractive, too, for whatever reason. In other words, people who are emotionally young adults (i.e. developmentally in sync with the age I would feel if I were typically-developing) are the LEAST attractive, with those developmentally much younger (more like my emotional age) or older (about old enough to be a parent of someone at that age) are much easier to feel a kinship with.

Some very good ideas on here so far but I am curious about those people who have stated that it depends on the maturity, ect of the people involved. Surly a relationship between two people can not just be dependent on where you are in your life cycle. Would an 80 yo and 50/40/30 yo be considered as weird or inappropriate? Not that I am any of those ages I am simply wondering.

OK, if you're speaking strictly about what society at large will think about the age difference, then the rule of thumb is "Old enough to be his/her parent = too old." The more years after, say, 15 you are than your significant other, the more eyebrows will raise and fingers will waggle behind your backs. Mind you, this has NO correlation to the success or failure of the relationship itself, unless you're bothered by what people think about it.

I would say that if you're an adult, don't date anyone under 18.

I have to agree on some parts but disagree withbthe main question.. btw 1st time I typed this up it was soo long)...
anyways my idea as a 21 year old male for age limit was 19 min and 26 Max.. I wanted a woman who was on my maturity level which is pretty high on some stuff...
anyways my opinion on age limit began to change when my best friend (she is like the sibling i never had and same for her) who is just 20 was dating a guy who was 33 and he is agreat guy... she also was on a higher intellectual level and maturity like myself so she was able.to get along perfect.with him. In fact they will soon be having a baby (which is a miracle btw) and getting married... I did realize that he is likeley to die before her and that can be rough depending on what their ages are when it occurs... but I started to slightly change my view point on age and love but not enough yet.. (there are soo many factors that go along with age and age differences that must be considered; for instance an older individual is likely more focused on settling down while a young person may not have that in their plans for a while..) but if thesebvarious other conditions do not conflict then that is awesome...

Soo, anyways I was still holding to.my accepted age ranges for women because it is a well known fact that men getting younger women isn't really that far out and is pretty accepted... but then my story and.my opinion changed drastically...

Right now I am in a serious relationship with a woman that is 11 years older than I... and I couldn't be happier and we are In love. At first I was obviously apprehensive but then my best friend tale me trust her and to not judge and go for it.. I did and it was the best decision I could have ever made.. sure she is older but we click so well and there aarent really any other conflicting intrests. One thing that worrys most guys when it comes to dating older women is looks and aging which is pretty damn superficial but I admit the thought has crossed my mind although at this point looks wouldn't matter cause I know what is inside... and that is the most part of what I love... in any case. My lady looks at least 5 years younger than she is because of a rare medical condition that set her aging 5 years back so I am a lucky fellow... for me its nit about the looks when it comes to my feelings for her but I do have to say the fact she is the most beautiful woman I know is kinda a nice bonus...

Wow that was shortened version... also i shouod probably shut up now before my love sees this abd goes off on me... lol women and thier obsession with thier age... geesh.....and if u actually made it this far my conclusion is that age does play a role in love but it is not a defining boundary. Love does not have age...

I prefer about + or - 5 years from my age. Imo I am kind of picky about that I guess.

Yeah, big age gaps freak me out, too. I'd prefer someone close to my own age, either 5 minus, or at the most, 5 older.

I'm the same as the above two posters. I prefer +/- five years within my age (44). I would make exceptions on the younger side (maybe down to 7-8 years) but I'm less likely to on the older side.

Age means very little.. only the circumstances and things that come with age are what have the effect...

Thats a hard topic. I think everyone has there own preference pertaining to age. Personally, I do set age restrictions for me due to maturity reasons and old men creep me off. I'm 23 right now and my age range would probably be between 20-29. I'm really looking for a guy that's near the same maturity range and is not just aiming to date a girl who's young. I have to be aware of the creepiness factor cause I look very young. I just ended working as a courtesy clerk at a supermarket and a lot of people thought I was between 16-19. Despite that, I still had a 40 yr old Brit guy that would hit on me. The 20-29 age range would probably work best for me cause of the likely maturity level and where the guy is in life would be good. I do not want to date a 40 yr old divorced guy for example.

I think when it comes down to it, as long as the attraction is genuine and not driven by money or looks, age shouldnt play a huge factor as long as both partners are ok with the age difference. But sometimes, that can be hard to distinguish. For example, a young girl might find it appealing to date a guy 15-20 yrs older if the guys got lots of money and good profession. But I think if your looking for a partner, you should look within the range of someone close to your age is the safest bet. Everyone has different standards of what there willing to date. But if you happen to hit it off with someone much older or younger and you or the person has no issues, i dont see why not?

There's no real hard and set rules other than the legal age of consent.

For me, I would not date someone under 21 because it would be too hard to bring her along if I go to a bar or a happy hour.

6 years difference seems to be ok.

Keeping in mind, it is often socially taboo for a woman to date someone younger; but ironically women mature faster.

Technically once you're 18 you can date anyone else over 18, though I personally would not see anything wrong with someone 16 dating someone 18, but I don't create the laws.

It is sixteen in the United Kingdom, well it's 16 to have consensual sex and get married. I'm sure it's lower in some countries.
