Looking someone up online implies you don't trust them and you were skeptical and it offends them you got suspicious about them so you had to look them up to be sure they were genuine and search can give out inaccurate information.

I just looked myself up on Spokeo and it has some inaccurate information because it doesn't always update. It says I live in Montana. I don't know what else was said because I am not paying full membership to see my full results. I take it you have a membership. It also claimed I am on websites I am not even on. I suspect people use the same username as me on those sites. But it's still fun to look yourself up to see how much is true and how much isn't. My ex used to read through my posts here and it didn't bother me and people were telling me he was stalking me and I said how is it stalking if it's posted online. It's there for everyone to read. If someone was going through my posts to use against me, that is a different story because they can be taken out of context and use to twist things and it's pretty common during a divorce when there are children involved.

No, I do not have any paid memberships on sites like that. I have no reason to. I assume it would only be necessary to pay for extra info if you were doing an urgent search or tracing a long-lost relative or something. Spokeo indeed tends to get things wrong and confuse / invent results if the person's profile is small. If there is a large amount of info on them, it will usually be correct.

When I do checks on people, in my case it's not due to mistrust, but curiosity. I do it just because I can. I'm nosy, and curious to find out how much info has been collected.

Being interested is one thing.

Being invasive and not respecting someone's privacy is another.

What you see is what you get.

A lot of people on AS do not seem to be very trusting anyway. So starting a relationship with the trust already trampled on is not auguring well for the long term.

I am loving the girl Sheldon high five exchange btw - made my day!

Nothing can come to a happy ending if your stalking just restraining orders and the possibility of spending time in jail.

^ With a username like that, it would be best to make no comment.

(Edit: I meant I am not going to comment on what you said. I didn't mean you shouldn't have commented. This is obviously the thread for you).

It's all about the context. Not many plant stems get forced into straitjackets and put in padded cells.

heh, imagining myself in a white padded cell (sound and light proof) was my happy place for many a year.

the other definition definitely fits this thread, v. funny

anyway, I don't want to start another thread but I was just thinking how odd it is that in the 5th Element Leeloo falls for Korben Dallas..I mean it's a bit cheesy and unbelievable..

Anyhow, back to stalking. Some people still claim it could be overcome and cite great experts like How I Met Your Mother etc. I don't consider reading back people's old posts as stalking, I consider that homework. But somewhere else this guy shadedtree was saying how his online dating strategy was to give details on his profile in the hopes that the girls who are interested would stalk him ..i.e. check his email and facebook and his friends and dive into friends pictures and all sorts of things. He made it sound like stalking people is just a normal part of courtship these days. Colour me unsurprised in many ways, but still.. where is the line?

I used to have an avatar of a celery stalk. That didn't quite cut my weird inspector type interrogation of socialising. So I changed it to Inspector Dreyfus of the original Pink Panther movie where he is in a padded cell writing his memoir (with his foot, after shooting himself in the face, hence the nose) of how he is going to get rid of Inspector Clouseau.

@LogicalMolly, I think it stays the same even if you get older. I think the impact might be how much you look after yourself.

@leafplant, facebook seems to be a requirement these days, as people want to check what you say with what you display about yourself. Usually to find out if you are already in a relationship etc.

^ I'm having difficulties with interrogatory celery image, it was wise to change the avatar to Inspector Dreyfus

both answers were actually to comments I made..what is it with men today, they treat all women is interchangeable
