That is expensive where I live as well. I don't know a single person my age living alone without a roommate/flatmate or a girlfriend/boyfriend. it depends on the girl, but usually a girl in the same shoes will be more tolerating.
For example, in my experience, it turned out that car-less girls never are about my lack of car, it turned out that those having cars are most repelled by it, probably the latter perceive guys without cars inferior to them while the former perceive them as equal. It's weird eh? because pragmatically speaking, a couple with one car would have an easier time than a couple without car at all, so logically a girl with a car should care less, but it seems this is true for the opposite case.
I think it's the same when it comes to apartment.
