I've long suspected the concept of "cause" isn't scientific at all. As far as I know, it's only useful for talking about very complex systems in a familiar way, generally involving the arrow of time and hence the second law of thermodynamics. When you study a single interaction between two particles, it becomes meaningless to tell what "causes" what. We only have laws telling what happens from a given initial state, and the elements you could arbitrarily label "cause" and "effect", like maybe force and acceleration, occur at the same time.

Maybe if you define "holding us back" as including enabling us to make devices like the one you used to post here, rather than continuing to make crude pictures on cave walls and to die young without even knowing there are people living more than a hundred kilometres away from you, much less telling them science is holding us back.

Science works. That's the only thing preventing it from being completely drowned out of existence by all sorts of irrational but seemingly appealing nonsense.
Yes, it has served us well and will continue to serve us for a long time. "holding us back" refers to the unquantifiable aspects of life, like love.

There is much more happening than we can count. It is my belief, that if humans survive long enough, the concept of numbers will be abandoned entirely for a more realistic system of understanding.

But love is just chemical reactions muahahahaha!

So what though...most feelings/emotions are chemical reactions.

So if the worlds water supply were to be tainted with a drug that inhibits the release of oxytocin, people will no longer fall in love? I sense an evil mad science experiment should be conducted for world domination! Muahahaha!*puts on his lab coat and goggles*

As I wrote, oxytocin only "remembers" that you are in love, and it has nothing to do with the process of falling in love itself. Much like low serotonin only "remembers" that you are depressed, and doesn't cause depression.

It's actually a pretty simple process because at least for me obsessive thoughts about a girl is what is keeping the oxytocin level high, and when I stop obsessing, the level will slowly decrease and the crush will fade and eventually disappear.

But if there was a way to block the chemical reactions from happening nobody would like eachoter!

Oxytocin isn't the only chemical involved just the main one and blocking it would have major effects on the body as love isn't it's only function. Plus it has many different receptors so would be difficult to block all types
