The fact I didn't know that just proves my point and I will never understand the whole 'expensive rings and weddings' thing as long as I live. There are so many more tangible things that money can buy (especially that I don't exactly live in a well off area) and any woman who doesn't get that would not have been someone I would have been too interested in. How can you build a life together when you start off with massive debt (I know far too many people who do).

Gold. I guess gold is ok for an engagement ring. For our wedding rings I was thinking of getting steel ones.

Don't! My brother-in-law lost a finger when he get stuck on something with his wedding band, and was damned lucky it was gold and thus soft enough to easily be cut away. Steel or tungsten would have been a whole different story.

$3,000 on a ring, you can use it on your wedding & the reception.

That's another topic right there: we spent less than that out of pocket on our wedding and had a very glamorous ceremony: one elderly guest told me it was the single best wedding she ever attended. I could help but notice after the ceremony when we were getting our pictures taken at the local park so was another couple. They looked about 22 or 23 and all 14(!) members of the wedding party had matching dresses/suits that must have cost $300 each minimum along with several stretch limos. Their rings must have cost $5000 easily! I turned to my wife and said "three years, tops."

In other words, the #1 issue that divides couples is finances. A wedding is only one day so don't blow your savings on a ceremony and/or rings or you will be looking at another messy expense in the future. There is certainly nothing wrong with a quality ring and ceremony but not if you have to sacrifice your financial future.

That sounds really scary! Maybe I should get a silicone one. Though a wedding ring that can be removed quickly and easily has some unfortunate connotations.

Yes^^

If you like the look of steel, you can get white gold rather than the usual yellow and platinum is silver looking. My son’s and his wife’s are of some type of black material. Not gold or platinum for sure!

Cracker Jacks, in the old days, used to have a fake ring as a prize. Little boys used to give little girls those rings—when they were about 6 years old.
I put an onion-ring on my girlfriend's finger a few times  It was sorta a joke when I did it but we would be married by now if we weren't both disabled cuz it'll screw up benefits.

I know quite a bit about jewelry and check trends regularly. For people with limited budget nowadays I'd recommend getting a lab-created diamond. Not CZ or moissanite, but real diamonds made in labs. They are so much cheaper and look the same as natural diamonds. None of the family and friends would be able to tell. If you're willing to buy them second hand they are even cheaper. Just make sure they come with certificate or original receipt. For $1000 you can get about 1 carat stone mounted on 14k gold setting, a couple hundred dollars more it can be mounted on platinum. You can probably get quite a honker for $3000, but I would stick to the smaller stones if you don't want people asking questions. :)

I like white gold or platinum.

This is the diamond my last boyfriend gave me. I think it was a carat but I didn't keep it. It was in white gold.

↑ That is similar to the one I gave Mrs. Fnord, except she wants only yellow gold for her jewelry.

Great point :wtg: It's less than a hundredth of one thousand. I think it's much more practicle & finachially smart to use that money on something you can both do together as a couple or to make an investment & put that money towards something that will make both your lives better like buying a house or getting more education to advance your career so you can better provide for her. Diamonds like cars depreciate in value a lot after you buy em. I am painfully aware that women are stereotyped to be much less logical than guys & moreso Aspie guys & women are stereotyped to see rings as a status symbol. Plenty of women are not ike that but the diamond industry pushes that image as their marketing ploy.

I'm one of those women who isn't like that. I don't like wearing any jewellery because of sensory reasons, and I never understood why women are supposed to wear an expensive trinket to show they're engaged. It's kind of like extortion or guilt-tripping. "I'll give you this thing that's worth more than a new car, and I want you to show everyone so they know I bought your fidelity and you must be faithful to me".

It's kind of creepy in my opinion, but then again as an autistic woman I overanalyse everything.

In my opinion, it is more likely that it is an ego-trip ... "Oh, look at the expensive trinket MY boyfriend/fiancé/husband gave me!  He is more willing to lavish his income on me than your boyfriend/fiancé/husband to spend on you!"

 I confess that I did not want any of my wife's friends or relatives to think I was a no-account loser, either!
