MaxE:

Australian religion is aggressive, conservative, assimilating BULLSH*T.

As a kid, even though my mum listed me as non-religious, I actually had to take a Christian religious class every Friday (at my school, you'd go to a certain room based on your religion).

Mine was right next door to my regular classroom, and my teacher actually allowed whatever kids he had to just play games and have fun every single time while i had to suffer, bored stiff, right next door hearing them, listening to some crazy old coot brainwash me with religious stuff I didn't believe in.

There was even a once a month or so thing where we go to the nearby church to have that stuff instilled into us, again even if we were non-religious.

It's all one big conspiracy. I do live in a very, very conservative and extremely religious city, there are more churches than schools, and that's not counting churches within schools, and it feels like there is a church on nearly every corner. Religious diversity doesn't exist as there is racism against Muslims and such, and it's just Catholics and Christians.

Australia itself actually has a very high non-religious rate, at 25%, and rank 9th as the most non-religious country in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irreligion_in_Australia

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/08 ... countries/

It just seems, in my personal experiences, and apparently Retrogamers as well, the few Australians who are religious are particularly aggressive in forcing beliefs onto others.

I think America has this issue as well, but Jehova's witnesses are annoying nuisances who constantly are at your doorstep pestering you to sign up, without even asking we are even somehow sent books or papers by Jehova's Witnesses informing us of it... 8O

In my first elementary school (in Newfoundland, Canada), everyone had to take religious classes in public school. As well, the schools were segregated: one for Catholics and the other for "everyone else (Protestant)". I lived near the Catholic school but had to go to the other end of town for school. It was called "religion" but had little to do with anything but Protestantism. It goes without saying that all the kids in the neighbourhood went to the Catholic school.

My Fiancée is Catholic so I've gone to her church a few times. I have found while the rituals are a little strange they are generally very friendly and open minded. Even the sermons (the last one was about the important of helping refugees) are VERY thought provoking. I make it clear I am not religious but nobody has treated me with anything less than respect. Most of the adherents are far more "liberal" than the church hierarchy and many are quite intelligent and open minded.

Wow, it sounds like I would have been better off going to a Catholic church than a Pentecostal church.

Here's an example of the the Pentacostal's "thought provoking" sermon. From my other thread
Quote:
As for me telling them I'm not religious, they don't even seem to know the meaning of atheist. From my other thread
Quote:
And the girl in question thinks the ONLY reason I'm an atheist is because I've never heard of Jesus. How can she think I've lived in western culture all my life and never heard of Jesus? And how can she think that once she tells me of him I'll totally believe her without requiring any evidence at all?

If the Catholic church you attended doesn't pull that sort of crap and if their music doesn't sound like ass, then it sounds like the Catholic church is more intelligently ran the the Pentecostal church.
