If the girl is only 16, her parents are probably still quite young themselves. Given normal circumstances they should be around for a few more decades.

Her parents are probably trying to teach her to be more independent & to act more like they think an adult is supposed to act. However restricting her from dating as a punishment for not meeting expectations is only keeping her more dependent & childlike.
