... I never understood why women are supposed to wear an expensive trinket to show they're engaged. It's kind of like extortion or guilt-tripping. "I'll give you this thing that's worth more than a new car, and I want you to show everyone so they know I bought your fidelity and you must be faithful to me"...
In my opinion, it is more likely that it is an ego-trip ... "Oh, look at the expensive trinket MY boyfriend/fiancé/husband gave me!  He is more willing to lavish his income on me than your boyfriend/fiancé/husband to spend on you!"

 I confess that I did not want any of my wife's friends or relatives to think I was a no-account loser, either!

Yeah, weird isn't it? I feel sorry for men who feel obligated to buy them. I do understand a simple, tasteful wedding band or a family heirloom, but these blood diamonds have become too showy.

For comparison, my current beau bought me a vintage Oxford English Dictionary set for my birthday. That was way more meaningful to me than a piece of jewellery.

Now I have this song in my head:

Diamond Mine - Blue Rodeo

I guess that's a plus about my girlfriend not really having any friends but I only really have one friend myself & I only seen him a few times since I moved :( Me & Cass are each other's best friend & company anyway :D As for her family, most all of them have their own various issues & disabilities & so did their romantic partners so being a loyal partner who tries his best to be supportive & do right by Cass is more valued than money. I get along with her family better than my parents or anyone in my extended family thou I still don't spend a lot of time with them. She does like some jewelry but she cares about it being pretty(her standards of pretty) & she finds some of the very cheap stuff much prettier than a lot of the more expensive stuff. She rathers I buy her snacks like candy which I like to eat as well
