General consensus seems to be that they don't like to fake smiles. I don't like to fake smiles either but my mom always impressed on me that I need to smile for pictures so I try. Usually comes out like crap though! I like it better if I can look friendly without smiling (like my icon) but unfortunately I usually come out looking pissed lol!
Your icon is lovely. Smiles are over-rated - I smile too much for my own good (I don't intend to - some cultural conditioning or too much love when I was kid or something). So I smile even at strangers all the time - they must think I am crazy!
On plus side I make connections with people without trying. Down side people who know me get very worried if I am tired and not laughing or smiling all the time! How fair is that!

Well that makes sense. I used to not smile when I was younger for the same reason. I was over weight thanks to medications and so for me it was hell to even have pictures taken in general because I could not stand to see myself in them. That all changed when I got in shape and quit the medications. Now I love having pictures taken of me. I take them of myself also.
I smile because ti looks good. It makes me appear more friendly (which most times I am) and also it makes the smiler more inviting to the opposite sex. A very handy thing in the world of dating
I also like smiling because I take a lot of pride in my teeth. I take good care of my mouth for a few reasons one being attractiveness. So for me, again smiling is a way to show off ...
