Pedantry: WHY is it a turn-off to women?

You must remember that attractiveness is a subjective quality, and is entirely dependent on the eye of the beholder. Someone you might find unattractive, another person might find attractive.
I totally agree.

*People have a tendency to find those who have similar facial features to them more attractive* - so by logical deduction a girl (who you class as attractive) is likely to go after a guy (who you class as attractive) because you would be attracted to certain physical traits, therefore they must both have those physical traits, therefore they are more likely to find each other attractive because they share similar features.
Now *THAT* Im gonna have to disagree with you about, sunshower. Based on what I know and what I have seen for myself, similarity in physical appearance is NOT a factor in what people find attractive. I have a narrow face with a big nose and sunken eyes; but I like women with rounded faces and bulging eyes because to me those are feminine facial features.

Arguing about trivial things may be fun when you've known someone a few months.
When you first meet someone, arguing and defensiveness from the other person are usually a hint to back off and switch subjects. Sarcasm and teasing don't always translate well online. There's no vocal or facial cues to let someone know you're joking. I don't think you were being particularly obnoxious, but without any other feedback, she probably interpreted it as one-upmanship instead of good natured teasing. In an offline setting, she probably would have reacted differently.
I've done it before, so it's a pretty universal mistake. The best strategy is to back off and change topics or apologize for the misunderstanding. Sometimes if someone's having a really crappy day, an apology might clue them into the fact that they're taking it out on you.
