Video call can be the smartest choice if we want to avoid any kind of trolls in online relationship. But if the other insists that he/she cannot video call since his internet speed is too slow to do that, should I be suspicious of this person ? If I were there, I could trust what he said. Would you trust him? What would be an alternative to video call?

You could ask them to take a photo holding a random, inanimate object or a signed piece of paper.

That is the only alternative I can think of, minus a blind date.

I agree, familiarity and comfort are very important when it comes to feeling a sense of acceptance and trust. It is important that the other person knows that you can not always be expressive or communicative towards them.

I prefer writing because there isn't a need to process body language or facial cues, social interactions are very dynamic and they can be very exhausting..I come across as very robotic and expressionless at times.

Yeah, She's holding a signed piece of paper, which was a good idea!

Yes. I fell for my two exes & current girlfriend before we exchanged pictures as they fell for me before we did too. Looks just aren't that important to me.

But how did you trust them? Had you ever been suspicious of them that they might not be real? They must have given you some cues that they were real, which could be these cues if there are?
