Video call can be the smartest choice if we want to avoid any kind of trolls in online relationship. You could ask them to take a photo holding a random, inanimate object or a signed piece of paper.

That is the only alternative I can think of, minus a blind date.

Yes. I fell for my two exes & current girlfriend before we exchanged pictures as they fell for me before we did too. Looks just aren't that important to me.

But how did you trust them? Had you ever been suspicious of them that they might not be real? They must have given you some cues that they were real, which could be these cues if there are?

We met on online forums. Me & my 1st were online friends for awhile & my 2nd & current met on this forum & I looked up their post history.
