Man...these are experiences I never experienced!
When I went to junior high, it was nominally "integrated"--but, in practice, the black/Puerto Rican kids and the white kids were separated from each other. I had no classes with any black kids; it was weird.
Arverne is pretty much a s**thole now; though there is a new "development" there, segregated from the rest of the area, which has condos for about $500,000. Right on the beach.
Pity that Arverne has gone down the tubes. Like most of the rest of Far Rockaway west of Rockaway Park. There are still nice parts on the eastern part of the Rockaway Peninsula.
I lived in Far Rockaway (Bayswater) in the late 1970s.
My Catholic School was totally integrated and about 40% Black, 40% White and 20% Hispanic and we grew up and got along together. We never had problems in school. It was always with outsiders. I ended up on the 'Hit List' of the local gang because I was Captain of the student patrol. But they never got me. Give me three steps and I could outrun anyone. (Went on to lead my High School in medium/long distance Track

I used to go to East Rockaway to surf in late 70's till about 81. It was ok then. Went to some parties on the blocks there. Named after States? I saw a youtube video about a nice little surf (and beer) club that's grown up there since Sandy. But I was surfing mostly at Long Beach and West End Jones Beach. The coast is a treasure still. Amazing sometimes what can grow out of the ashes.
... Have been near water my entire life... A waterboy born and bred, water in my feet right to my head... random dont know where that came from!
