Catcalling could be threatening at times.

It could be like a gang of kids who gang up on one kid in the playground.

It could acquire that sort of character.

I've seen this sort of thing happen.

A bunch of guys catcall, then surround a woman.

Imagine if you're sitting on a train, and a bunch of people, all of a sudden, surrounded you.
Just because some jerks use catcalling like that, doesn't mean everybody does. The problem is that when catcalling is brought up, it is always this kind of behavior that people think about. Not a guy expressing appreciation for a girl he likes (oh, I forgot, that's objectification and sexual harassment too).
How do you define cat calling?I define it as shouting sexual comments at a person not expressing appreciation so perhaps we are on the wrong page.

I just think shouting at anyone is disrespectful
I think rdos would agree with you.

Catcalling is not a very specific behavior. On one end, it can very well be characterized as sexual harassment, like in the example in kraftiekortie's post. At the other end, it is more like a guy making a wolf-whistle because he finds a girl hot, and he wants to get her attention. Thus, it is on a continuum between more normal guy-goes-up-to-talk-to-girl and outright sexual harassment. My argument is that people need to see it on a scale, not as always sexual harassment. Once you see it on a scale, and not as a specific problem, you might also understand how this is connected to typical NT-male courtship, and that we cannot redefine that as "sexual harassment". Sure, we still want to see seriously on the part that IS sexual harassment, but to judge any contact a male tries to make with a female as harassment is not a healthy attitude.
