I just want to tell you about my experience of Match.com. I signed up and my experience of the company and website was pretty bad.

I signed up to the love guaranteed offer. You get 1yr free if you try it for 1yr and don't meet anyone. I did try and contact a few girls but with limited success as most girls don't even bother to reply. At the end of the year I expected my 1yr free but then I saw a direct debit on my bank account without authorisation, it was from match.com. I contacted them and explained that they didn't have the right to steal my money but they told me that I must have contacted a certain number of other members in a certain time, certain blah blah blah. I demanded my money and the women went away and spoke to the manager. I got half my money back. I didn't even ask for the second year. I then asked her to close the account, in my protest.

If you sign up for this, beware that there is very little chance of meeting anyone unless you are proactive, and especially during this recession they are trying anything to take your cash with very little scruples. Turn off the auto direct debit setting, and monitor the privacy / financial settings like a hawk. Don't go with match if you can help it.

That's why I liked the idea of Aspie affection, likely matches and free. But it doesn't seem to be on at the moment.

Always read the small print.

Aspie Affection sucks. Hardly and girls on there at all.

This is true of almost any service you subscribe to on the Internet. They will bill you first and ask questions later. You might be able to fight with them and get them to honor the deal, but be prepared for a hassle of monumental proportions.

That isn't just limited to the internet.

After I accidentally subscribed to match for six months rather than one I checked out the six month guarentee and found there were a number of rules in place which you have to stick to in order to qualify - a minimum number of contacts a month, etc.

They also charge you more to access through your mobile and go to lengths to prevent smartphones with 'full' browsers bypassing this, which meant I couldn't meet this criteria when I had no PC for over a month.

Pretty typical.

Wait until you try to cancel TiVo! I had to lie to them and tell them I already cancelled 6 months ago and was still being billed! They cancelled in a hurry. A friend of mine cancelled by telling them he was shipping off to Iraq. How pathetic it is that such a company with such super techies can have such sleazebag sales and business people.

Advice for future: always use a credit card for recurring montly charges! Never a debit card or direct bank account withdrawal.

It is much easier to dispute credit card charges. Besides, it is bank's money, not yours.

It's easier to dispute through credit cards, yes, but you can cancel a direct debit through your bank for a current account but not for a credit card.

Honestly most of the paid sites are expensive and a waste of time. I found my partner through OKcupid which is free and probably has the best matching system (if you take the time to answer the questions). In general I avoid paying for dating sites, it is not worth the money.

This is easy to get around, just spoof your user agent and there's nothing they can do about it. I believe Android phones let you do this pretty easily from within the standard browser, though you may need Cyanogenmod.

Good to know about these payed dating sites, I am active on OKCupid too and it works like a charm and has tons of people.

Yes there also are Aspie on there too - Male and Female!

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

At least match.com didn't set you up with an ex. Has anyone else heard of that similar story. OK cupid, I have gotten better matches now that I have answered about 900 questions. So I hope you have better luck there.

And this is why I don't bother with dating sites.... There are often scams involved in this.

Better to find one IRL than on the interwebz. ;)

I joined one for meeting Polish girls in the UK.
What they do, and many others also, they get some hot girl to write to you, but in order to write back, you have to becoma a paid up member, when you do write back, you get no reply from the girl.
Lucky the Polish site was Paypal and just a small monthly subscription, so I only lost a fiver.
Once the month was hot, after getting no interest during the month, all of a sudden, theres another hot Polish girl who wants you to write to her.

I just found out that i'm probably still being charged for match after being on there for over 6 months (my initial subscription). Can i cancel it without ringing that number thats on there? It's free from a landline but the only landlines in our house are where other people are and i'm embarrased. How do i turn off auto-renew? I just had a brief look and couldnt find the function
