We used to have music that degraded women but not anymore. We don't celebrate that fact enough! :D

Romance is alive and well since the media and corporations promote it. Unless they were young and/or rich, most people married for practical reasons. Industrialism created more free time and the media promoted "feeling based" romance. The movement gained ground in Victorian time and picked up speed postwar 20th century.
Romance was of course in literature before then, but only the rich or clergy could read it. Today, it has reached absurdity where one has to play constant mind games to keep the relationship going. Feelings are natural, but now people are ruled by them.

Hehe, this song's from five years ago but still par for the course.

IMO this sounds like a eulogy to romantic love more than anything. A sneeze, sniffle, belch, and some E&J to pour in the casket.
