It doesn't say being a '5' is better than being a '10'. It says that being a '10' is best in terms of receiving male interest. But if you aren't a '10', you're a '6' for example, you would receive more interest if there is a divide in opinion on your attractiveness than if you were a universally agreed upon as being a '6'.

Your last point was really the most interesting thing, I was surprised at how many women had a pronounced "U" shaped-curve - they got almost an equal amount of "1"s and "5"s. Come to think of it, this would probably be the most attractive sort to me too...
The sample size was huge in this study, so there probably is something to it.
