If you are married to one and things go bad, you can be held liable for child support for kids that aren't even yours.

Paedophobia is looking like an increasingly sensible lifestyle choice.

Having to pay child support for kids you haven't even adopted is wrong.

It's screwed up.

All the more reason to make disliking children, especially other people's children, a worthwhile view.

Eh, that won't happen in every case. It doesn't even happen in most cases.

It seems wrong on the surface, but I have to wonder if it's still wrong if he's the only father the kid has ever known. Meaning, he basically raised the kid.

Biological connections are not the be-all-end-all to family bonds.

It's okay, though. A single mom wouldn't want anyone that's not dedicated to being a father figure to her children.

Well if I ever get divorced or separated or if my husband dies, I will never date anyone who has kids but then that means no one might not want to date me because of my son.

That's just peachy. I don't want to be a father figure to any child; I can't even look after myself properly, let alone any spawn.

See, I don't have this sort of stipulation. I just have to be able to handle their kid and given the ability to be an actual parent to them and not reduced to a visitor.

A mistake many biological parents make against step-parents.

*shrug* Everyone has their limitations. Knowing what they are is an important step in finding someone and having a successful relationship with them.

I'm just pointing out that it's not *always* wrong for a step parent that didn't adopt the kid to have to pay child support in the event of separation or divorce.

I think I'm probably lucky in that regard in that I can see my limitations.

My brother, who now has an unplanned baby girl, couldn't. He loves her all the same but he's still not fully used to the idea yet. He's just realised that it's taken a big chunk of his life away from him.

So it's a cautionary tale for me, if you like.

The word 'Durex' is constantly on my mind when anything to do with sex comes up.

If you live with a single mom for any length of time but don't marry her, you can get popped for child support in California. Usually in those cases the dad is a deadbeat and often in jail, and the county is looking for someone else to cut the kids a check every month. I don't know why it's allowed to continue.

Evidence, please. I've lived here my whole life and have yet to come across such a thing that couldn't be explained in some other way.

For some people, a baby does ruin their lives. If you're ill-prepared or incapable it can be devastating.

Me, I'm happy with my two hell raisers. I wouldn't have it any other way.

You mean...this man, after he ceases acting as the two boy's parent,
is required to give their mom the $400 a month in benefits he receives from Veteran Affairs because they're LISTED AS HIS DEPENDENTS???

How utterly horrible.
