Apparently tons of people are showing up in my "people you might like" section. I've never looked at their profiles, but I don't know if I trust that the site is populated by mostly real human beings. Plus, I don't know how I feel about using a dating site just to find a lover. It wouldn't be an instant thing, but it makes me feel desperate to use this site. Why am I still using it? Well, it's a way to meet people, and more important it has kept me busy, so I think it's worth using for now.

I just want to know about the experiences of people here that have used the site. I'm not an experienced user, but those who are more knowledgeable can tell me more about it. As far as I've heard most people don't seem to do well on this site. Has anyone had a good experience with it?

Well, I met someone from OKcupid once, so there are real people on it, the proportion of which I could not guess at.

There are real people on it, but it seems like people on the site are desperate. I mean, yes, I'm on a dating site, but I'm not looking to know anyone that's way older than me. That's just awkward. A 31-year old private messaged me saying I'm his type, and I had to be blunt about my age. Thing is, that 31-year old probably has me in the range of people he'll date. Ugh...I put all that information in my profile for a reason. I want people in the range of what I'm looking for. ><

Sadly, that's what I was afraid of when I started. Most people are way older than I am on those sites. Some good, wise people could PM me and I'd feel like they're creepy old men.

EDIT: ~cough~ No offense to anyone on this site, but it seems less awkward on a forum to be talking to someone way older than you. On a dating site, that's just creepy.

I know nothing much about okcupid or dating sites in general but I feel that it's odd that someone would think a twelve year age gap could be construed as being close to your age range. Did you say on the profile the maximum age you'd be ok to date?

Also, some form of social networking site could work better for you as there could be people using them that are closer to your age? I know I met my bf online on a social networking site which no longer exists now and we've been together six years this halloween. Although, if you decide to go that route. remember to be careful about your personal details.

okcupid is an oddball in the online dating world to say the least.

none of the users actually read the questions, don't answer more than 2-300 or so, and don't put any thought into it.
*layers* of self contradiction is pretty normal, but you'll only see this if you read _all_ the publicly answered questions.

i've had a profile on there for well over a year, its a good way to find rather unique people.
There are far fewer women than men on the site, so many of them are driven away by the "signal to noise ratio"
this forms a positive feedback loop itself, but with most of the "noise" being the 10, perhaps 20% who shouldn't be on that site, or the internet for that matter... you get the idea.

read their blog, there's a lot of good info in there.

the people you might like are auto populated based on some internal algorithem that isn't very smart.

Yes, I'm a real person and I'm on okcupid. I met my last ex on that site, he's also a real person. So yes, there are real people. :)

@LostAlien: I listed on my profile I was looking for people from ages 18-22. In fact, it's one of the first things I listed. And a social networking site MIGHT work better, but I have my doubts.

@Johansen: I hate the layers of self-contradiction, because one thing I noticed is I'm bound to contradict myself at some point. I've answered over 500 questions in a single day. And most of my answers are completely honest and blunt. While yes I'm sure I made a mistake here and there, I was also wondering how many more liars roam the site compared to honest people. I want a dating site where people are serious and aren't morons.

@Erisad: XD

according to the statistics on the OKTrends blog, you are in the top age range in terms of volume of messages. everyone is going to try for the very young women even if their stated preferences do not include whippersnappers (link here)...

OKTrends wrote:
As you can see, men tend to focus on the youngest women in their already skewed preference pool, and, what's more, they spend a significant amount of energy pursuing women even younger than their stated minimum. No matter what he's telling himself on his setting page, a 30 year-old man spends as much time messaging 18 and 19 year-olds as he does women his own age. On the other hand, women only a few years older are largely neglected.

Im on okcupid since a month and only got contacted by men at least 10 years younger. Strange because most men in my age range are not interested in a woman of their age.
I allready met someone and he was very real.

I'm on there and I'm real......AFAIK :P. I'm pretty sure the two guys I am/was talking to are real, though there are some profiles there that I suspect are fake (mostly ones that are tongue in cheek ripoffs of other guys profiles, as well as one certain profile of a guy who seems too stereotypically nerdy to be true).

As an 18-19 year old female, you're pretty much fresh and gullible meat on any dating site. Not as wisened up to their tricks as the women their own age. That's why they go for you.

Perhaps then, as you have already stated your prefrence on this site, either ignore them or send them a generic rude message explaining that you are firm about your age preference. The reason I suggest to be rude is because there is no ambiguity to the message.

Maybe, but maybe it's just that guys are attracted to young women?

I have a profile there and I'm real :) I have met 3 people from there and they're all real. Two of the three are very nice people. The third, well, let's just say he wasn't all he said he was.

Thing is, there are TONS of sleazy guys on OKC, many of whom are looking for a one night stand. If that's not what you're looking for and you're a woman, you're going to have to weed through lots of those. I don't even stay on the site very long because I get freaks IMing me "hey baby wanna hook up?" Like really, dude, I'm not going to jump in my car and go meet you NOW, without ever having talked to you. Also, I'm in my 40s and I even get 24 year old guys messaging me sometimes, so the age thing is kinda loose (and I have an age range of 30-55 on my profile). If you weed through the freaks you might find someone nice.

And what exactly is it about those young women they find attractive?
Take a super hot young woman who is 18-20 and a woman in her early 30's who is even hotter and they would still go for the younger girl, cause the younger girl is more of a "sure thing" (due to her naivety).

The sleaze makes it worse for genuine men as well... I for one do what I can to write a thoughtful message based on what was said in the profile, and even though I'm not even on there for sex, I must have been grouped into the sleaze for some reason... because very few ever respond to me (which is hurtful), and even fewer respond to a followup or try to strike conversation (which is also hurtful)
