I went on a trip to Memphis tennesee for my grandparents 50th anniversary and I met one of my cousins for the first time. She was attractive and quite outgoing and it took me some time to muster up the courage to talk to her. When I did get into a conversation with her she was really nice and laughed at all my jokes and I was quicky getting to like her sanguine personality. I am now infatuated with her, but what I'm afraid of is that I don't know if this crush is natural or not. :?:

Of course its natural to have a crush on an attractive woman. It's not like she's your sister.

I think it's totally normal. I had a crush on my cousin for years. I think young people often have crushes on their cousins. There are not many other opportunities where you get to be so casual and chatty with a member of the opposite sex without the ackward tension that comes from dealing with nonfamily members. But I think this type of crush is something that eventually passes or develops into a more mature type of affection.

Thanks guys, but since I'm a christian, I need to know if this violates my christian standards, so I'm gonna need information from other people who share the same beliefs that I have.

Having a crush doesn't violate your christian standards.

In part:

Relationships by consanguinity
A man may not marry his:-
Mother
Daughter
Grandmother
Granddaughter
Sister
Aunt
Niece
Great-grandmother
Great-granddaughter

Cousins are not prohibited from marriage on grounds of being too close blood kin, so interest could be legitimate. But whether it is wise is another matter entirely.

Marriages between first cousins have an appreciably higher incidence of genetic complications in their children, because the degree of cosanguinity offers a greater risk of recessive genes finding the required "partner" gene.

Not necessarily. Although alot of people in the U.S. have a negative view on cousin marriages, that isn't necessarily so in the rest of the world. In many countries, cousin marriages are common and acceptable. In the U.S., most states do have a provision in their laws allowing cousin marriages.

Leviticus defines a list of prohibited relatives in marriages and cousins aren't on that list. In other words, you aren't necessarily a deviant for having these feelings. Acting on them though, could cause alot of trouble within your family. Even though it isn't necessarily deviant, it just may not be a smart thing to do.

Since you two got along so well, perhaps you could be friends and keep in touch with each other. You most likely will have to keep your feelings secret, but that doesn't mean the two of you can't have a good friendship type relationship. It can be nice to have a good, nonjudgemental friend you can talk to, and it can be good to be that for someone else.

Just my opinion.

Still, it needs to be kept in perspective. In vitro has a higher incidence of birth defects than one generation of cousins having kids. (Being that I'm adopted and from a state where it's difficult to get info on your birth parents, this is a matter of some concern for me.) The main problem comes in when your family tree looks more like celtic knotwork.

I work bordering an area with a higher than average level of recessive-inherited disease.
Enough to show.
A historic lack of movement of populations...

Both my parents came from families of seven children, and so I have around 35 first cousins. One in particular (she is only 2 months younger than me) has always been special. I suppose you could say it was a crush when we were kids. We now live far apart, and each have had our own lives, marriages and kids. We don't keep in touch and only seem to see each other now at occasional family events, but we have always had some sort of special bond. When our grandparents died it was me she sat with and turned to for comfort.

At 58 we don't really talk about the feelings as we did when we were young and single. It was never a sexual thing but was, and still remains, special.

Since I'm a fellow Christian I just think its unusual to have a crush on a cousin but since all my cousins are very young and none of them I am attractive towards.

Having a crush on your cousin is a natural thing. I don't think it's unnatural not to have a crush on a cousin; I have crushes on unrelated individuals myself.
