Ok, so I'm finally going to get a divorce. We've been separated, and had no contact, for nearly 3 years. It ought to be relatively straight forward under the 2 year separated rule. There's no kids, no assets to contest. I'm on Income Support so I should hopefully be able to still get legal aid for the court fees.

So I thought I'd go for the online divorce. It takes around 3 to 4 months this way.

I wondered if anyone else had used online divorce companies, or heard anything about them. I'm a bit nervous about doing it this way, but I can't really move on with my life (such as it is) until I get this done, and I have no cash for a solicitor.

This is the company I'm thinking of.

Any thoughts?

Um, I don't know, but your ID says you're in the Phoenix area and the URL of the company you're thinking of using is located in the U.K. Are you and your estranged spouse living in the same country? Sometimes that can complicate things. However, my first husband and I divorced amicably when I was living overseas and he was in America. He just mailed me the forms and I signed them and returned them, so the divorce was made legal in an American state.

My current husband did his own divorce by downloading the forms from his county website and filed them himself. He hadn't been in contact with his spouse for over a year, so he had to track her down and have her served with the papers. He did this through a process-serving company for a small fee...I think it cost him $75 to do that part. She was served at work, so he had proof of service to submit with his filing. He then had to wait for her to respond, but because she didn't, the divorce was approved by default. I think the whole thing took about three months. Thankfully they, like you, had no joint assets or children to argue over. Good luck with the process...it's a PITA but it's worth it to be able to move on with your life!

Thankyou. No, I'm not in Phoenix, that's the Wrong Planet designation for me, like you're a Woodpecker. I'm in the UK.

I'm not sure if it's easier or more difficult to get a divorce in the UK compared to the US. I don't know if my husband will contest it or not, and I guess that's when it will get difficult if he doesn't. If he doesn't agree to it, then I either have to prove unreasonable behaviour on his part, or wait for another 2 years.

Anyway, thankyou for the good luck. I'll be glad when it's over.

Duh! Thanks for setting me straight...Phoenix as in BIRD, not as in city, LOL! Sorry, my suggestions were not relevant to you at all. But good luck, anyway. Do you still have to wait a year and a day after the process, for your decree nisi? Now THAT is a PITA! :) Good luck!

It sounds like you might be a candidate for online, it is my understanding that they work well for simple/uncontested cases which it sounds like yours might be.

Mine was a little more complicated (kids and assets) but I used a "paralegal" (someone who creates legal documents but is not a lawyer) because we came to a reasonable agreement without the court having to intervene. This might be an option for you if your husband decides to contest (but it sounds like he won't).

Anyway, hope it's quick and (relatively) painless - good luck!
