Does prolonged eye contact and smiling mean anything?

When I'm walking from one classroom to another at school, there are many females who make prolonged eye contact and smile. Sometimes they make eye contact several times within a short time-frame. Does it mean anything at all, or are they just doing this to be polite? What is the normal reaction supposed to be in this case?

answers are varied. Ive heard a bazillion times that it means they see you as nice/friendly/attractive/*insert compliment*, but when i actually do something about it i get swatted off like a fly in a restaurant.

normal eye contact is about 1/3 of the time. 2/3 is usualy attraction or agression.

If the smile make 2/3 eye contact, play with there hair, move closer to you or want to make small talk they probably like you.

try to talk a little to them.

^This. Whenever I see the "signals" given off and try to move closer, I get rebuffed.

Funny thing I whould not have noticed this. If someone was talking to me. I whould have noticed them talking to me. But not the little things like flirty body language. Unless they touched me.

It can, but in most cases it doesn't.

if someone maintains eye contact with you whilst smiling for 3-4 seconds, it can mean they are interested in you, or think you are attracted.

i say if you are interested in them too, especially if they are constantly making eye contact with you in a short timeframe (like if you look away, then look back and they are looking at you ), then GO FOR IT!

it may be a good idea to pay attention to the girls when they are looking at other people, to see if they do the same thing. they may be smiling as they are standing or walking with friends and having a nice conversation but are not realising they are making eye contact with passers by. i often walk around with a smile on my face and don't realise until people smile back!

the fact that there are many girls who do it and not just an isolated case also points to it being chance and not directed at you specifically. it would be realistic to have one or two girls that consistently smile at you out of interest, but not several different ones in between every class.

as a ? NT lady, I smile and stare if I see a
guy I think is attractive but i don't know them.

so he knows I'm think "hey your cute, come talk
to me"
so in my opinion, it means something.
smile back. do a head nod. see
what happens. but if you don't know this girl
I would walk up and play with her hair or touch
her. that'd honestly just make you look creepy
and send her running
