Often people tell me I am funny.....online.

And there have been more than one instance of someone telling me I am funny on chat . Which means that I am not as funny in real and I feel this is a waste :-/.

So I was thinking, why's this?

It's not really a reflex speed, since I'd reply fast on IM with some joke or wicked humor and people would instantly laugh when they see me for real in the next day (since they recall the things I told them).

My problem is, in any real face-to-face conversation, this isn't happening. I am unable to be as at ease when conversing for real. I think part of this is distraction, the noise of the environments, the body languages, the facial expressions....etc

This isn't only limited to humor, but also related to the whole conversation skill

I am thinking if I can ... export this currently-only-online-applicable social skill to the real life, maybe a mental trick to practice on like picturing text while talking to someone, I suck at facial expressions anyways.

Any ideas?

Hmm I go though a simleir problem like you.

Very few people in real life and Internet chats know my real personality. My real personality is someone who is funny, qutie talktive, and thoughtful.

Most people is me as quiet, shy, boring so they never invite me to places. Becouse they think am not fun.

It's probably because being an arseburger your social skills get in the way of your true personality coming across.

Whoops I didn't read the thread properly. You have to not care what people think, because trust me, when a loud arseburger is themself in the real world they lose a lot of friends.

It's not that I obsessively care, but I am not living on a solo island as well.

If I ever want some form of friends/social life, then some tweaking/adjustment is a must.

Besides, the Asperger (or arseburger) would not be a scientifically-supported label pretty soon (on the next DSM).

More of the 70% of the diagnoses won't be valid anymore and WP will be mostly for people who struggle in social interactions.

If social situations make you self conscious then your mind is in a different place than when your on your own in front of your computer. Could be a matter of being more confident and chilled around people. I think I have the same problem.

It could be related to delivery. Online, humor is generally based purely on what is said, while in the real world it is often more about how you say it. I have seen situations where two people will tell the exact same joke, word for word...and while one may have a group of people rolling on the floor, the other will hardly even get a chuckle. I'm far from an expert on this so I can't offer a huge deal of advice, but this is what I see as a likely cause.

Also I'll be honest...I have seen some of your posts on here before and a few of them have seriously cracked me up lol.

Today I did my first attempt and it was great success, I dunno if it was just luck but I am making effort to put distractions aside from my mind.

As I was just entering the gym today, the was that staff (who became a buddy of mine) taking out a malfunctioned small LCD, towel on hand and a screwdriver. As there were series of thefts lately in the area I was like "hey! so you're the thief!". The girl who was on the leg press laughed bit loud for I dunno why, so I instantly wanted to exploit the moment, I stared on her and pointed on the sign "NO loud voices", that didn't help as her laughing went from normal to bit hysterical - for not sure really what, her friend laughed on her laughing too , it wasn't even the funniest comment.

She gave me later her name to add her on fb ;-] , fascinating.

epic win boo. epic win.

you just gotta be confident. if you lack confidence your jokes wont be funny for some reason, at least thats what i've found.

also, like someone above me said, a lot of it is HOW you say the joke. if you tell a joke using terrible tonality, the joke also wont go over well because thats just as large of a part of the joke as the joke itself.

Well, I don't think I am good in telling regular long jokes, because I don't know how to tell them, I suck at story-telling because my voice is very monotone (as few told me many times after i do oral presentations) . I would rely only on the funny short quick comments.

Also, when I went to the treadmill , there was her friend who was still laughing and she was on the LCD-less treadmill, I looked on the remaining wires and said "my condolences", that made her laugh too.

I was thinking in image (text) all the time.

Hmm, this method doesn't work much in a group setting (yet!). I always find myself the last to talk. :-/
