The ladder theory seems to discount the LBGT males, and people already in relationships. It also seems to be based from a personal standpoint and pitched to individuals that will agree based on their lack of dating prowess.
It doesn't discount them in the explanation. The explanation itself is about how there have to be a set of conditions for men and women to be friends - conditions I think are absolutely true. As for the theory, I think it makes a lot of sense for most men I know. Not for me personally, though, as I've had neither relationships nor friendships with women so far.
Unfortunately, these theories touch upon our basic human instincts. And even with all the technology, laws and other fail-safes we've developed, we're still subconsciously using the logic of killing and reproducing. The anger you feel when someone does something offensive is the anger a beta lion would feel when an alpha male blocked his path. The jealousy you feel is your sense of entitlement, your wish for conditions more suitable for reproduction.
