Well I'm 20 and never dated. I've heard over 99% of students have dated. I wish this was the case since now girls can see through my lack of experience and refuse to even hang out with me! I've even heard 20% of students have experienced dating violence.

I've never had any interaction with any girls whatsoever that are under 30.

Absolutely not.

The job of schools is to teach academic subjects. Nothing more. Nothing less.

That's a major part of the problem, too.

I used to teach college level math classes. I saw for myself just how far the level of students we were getting declined from the late 70s to the mid 90s. The decline in ability and knowledge was really pathetic.

I haven't taught a math course since the mid 90s, but from talking to others who have never quit teaching since the 70s, it is even worse now than in the mid 90s.

If I had kids, they would be home schooled. There is no way that I would trust their future to the public school system in the United States today.

Aside from physical activities like sports, no not really. The arts also fall into academia.
Dating, as harsh as it is for Aspies, should be left as a class in the School of Life.+
Wouldn't you find a teacher telling you how to date when it is both subjective and completely unique between each pairing or more persons bothersome or "wrong" if it doesn't fit a teaching style or method you agree with or like?

No, but they really should teach finances, ethics, logic, law and other things we would actually use during our lives (mainly a course on how to be an autodidact; people need to become less dependant on each other). More "academic" subjects should be taught by separate, optional courses, only for those who were interested in them.

While I am a guy who would probably benefit from a "dating class", I would not endorse it; the majority of the high schoolers learn well enough without help. The demand for such a class would be insufficient to justify it.

The only reason high school exists is to be a "school of life" and to form social roles and patterns for people. High school academically, the only requirements are a 6 hour test at about the 7th grade level (GED.)

Don't be so sure. After seeing the current state of the Peruvian public education, you'd probably hold the U.S. one in a higher regard...

That could be. I don't remember ever meeting someone from Peru in an American college. I've met people from many of the neighboring countries in school including an old roommate from Brazil (the women went wild over him) and an excellent grad student in Math from Bolivia.

I always wondered what happened to the student from Bolivia. He went home for the summer and didn't return that fall to continue his studies.

The only person from Peru I clearly remember meeting was living in Alaska. What I remember best about him was that he played soccer. Several of us hiked from near Skagway, Alaska to Lake Bennett in British Columbia in August of 1977. He was in such great shape that the walk didn't bother him at all. I think he could have easily hiked in a day what took us three days of hard work.

Most teens seem to know how on their own-
public schools can't even teach basic core curricula, so why would extraneous life skills be included?

yes, i think that it should be taught, but expanded beyond dating. perhaps an enhanced school curriculum that focused on social interactions, body language, and sexual signals would be advantageous for many people. maybe it could help cut down on date rapes and such, and could serve to break down some of the gender role barriers. i like this idea, OP.

this is a genuinely good idea.
most schools i know of already teach some kind of "life class", where i learned the basics about condom use, STDs, cooking (why you shouldn't eat burnt stuff or undercooked chicken)... flirting, dating and general interaction would fit in just nicely

If sex education is in high school, then why not simple dating, cultural expectations etc :)

I don't see the harm in educating people of what dating is, and general customs. But I think it would be inappropriate as well as creepy for teachers to be giving their own advice or standardized advice which does not fit the individuals they are teaching. People that come to L&D would know there's definitely a wide range of people here and one size does not fit all.

after brief consideration, i do not think it would be a good idea.
they would also have to teach "gay" people how to date, otherwise it may seem discriminatory to half the population, and the other half of the population may be horrified that teachers are educating their children how to date the same sex.
in addition to this, if someone is "gay", then they would be forced to either "come out of the closet" before they are ready, or else endure a farcical situation where they have to pretend they are interested in who they are not.

whatever. this is not in my arena of competence to consider further.
