What does it mean exactly if someone is not much too look at?

I hope someone didn't actually tell you this.

It’s an insult. When someone says that, they are probably saying this to insult you, rather than actually thinking (or knowing) that you “aren’t much to look at.”

"She's not much to look at" is either a nice way of saying "She's kinda plain-looking" or a very nice way of saying "She's ugly".

I would say "She has a great personality" instead.

I’ve had terrible crushes on women with great personalities and somewhat “ugly” looks.

I’ve had crushes on women who some people say are “not much to look at.”

Sounds like something some schmuck would say in a bar.

Or maybe some schmuck who doesn’t want to sound like a schmuck. I’ve known those types, too.
