From here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hit+on

Quote:
hit on-When a person, usually a male, calls out to, follows, etc. a female to get her number or take her home to bang her.

Does hitting on a girl really mean I'm just trying to take her home and have sex with her?

Not necessarily. It can simply mean asking someone out on a date.

This is one of those lovely catch-all phrases we use and abuse. A Feminista would say any unwanted words, including hello, would be hitting on a woman. Most guys would say it's asking for a date or phone number. It CAN extend to asking for a roll in the hay, but I'd say that's the far end of what it means. Hell, some women will say you're hitting on them just with yer look ! !! !

Eventually.

I always thought "To hit on" = "To flirt with", more or less?

ahayes, Urban Dictionary is a fiction slang, funny how they is only 1 entry there, that would be a guy who is just after sex..

Drowning is right in what she is saying to flirt or tease..

I've had women in their 40s hit on me, and I was 24 at the time.

Do you LIKE women in their 40's to hit on you?

I always thought of it as flirting being a mutual thing that both people are participating in. Hitting on someone is just a one-sided thing. It is usually more blatant.

I am not picky when it comes to age. The problem I had with this woman hitting on me was the fact that I was already in a relationship at the time. It was about 3 years ago.

Yes, the only flirting I've really ever done has been a mutual thing. I've never recognised when women have hit on me unless it's been truly blatant (like a woman twice my age virtually gluing herself to my every bodily contour... right before her husband stormed into the bar we were in, and almost literally peeled her off me).

How can we tell if someone is hitting on us nonverbally?

Unlike Tim, I am so picky when it comes to age. I'm 16, so I prefer someone in the same age range {15-17} so that the relationship is more reasonable.
