I had no doubt that devilish other thread I made was going to be a major dramafest, so I thought I'd introduce something a bit more chipper.

So here's a wonderful trick you can do with a rose or whatever other flower your romantic interest happens to like. Now the thing about giving a woman (and hey, probably a guy too) a rose directly is that it's a little boring. If you just walk up and give them the rose there's no real excitement.

That's the trick there, to build excitement, and one simple way to do this is to HIDE the rose somewhere they will find it. Be it under a pillow, in a backpack, in a desk, hide the rose somewhere they won't be expecting it, that way when they discover it the surprise adds to the positive emotion associated with the rose (and hence, you).

Another good trick for roses is to hand craft a rose in some kind of creative way. For example, I was watching this busker use pipe cleaners to make all kinds of neat stuff, so I figured out how to make her favorite kind of flower out of pipe cleaners and stuck it in her hair. Simply presenting her a bought flower from a shop is boring, but MAKING the flower itself adds value to the gift, and tucking it into her hair instead of handing it to her is more romantic.

You'd be surprised how small little changes to the way you do things can increase its romantic value.

and if you want to drive home the point that they have annoyed you in some way and should treat you better, make sure that the rose you hide has thorns. Or hide a bouquet somewhere dark and warm where it won't be discovered for a few days giving bacteria the chance to do their thing - nothing says I love you like an over powering smell of putrefaction.

Just kidding. The original point is a good one - being romantic is lovely and it should involve some effort.

I never understood the appeal of flowers.......

I know it's symbolic which is why giving them something by cutting it out of the ground where it will slowly die over the course of a few weeks/months seems iffy to me. I'd rather buy them a record or something.

I'm with Geekonychus on this. I disapprove of cut flowers - poor dead things. Happy to get a flower pot or a potted plant of any description (but cacti, while lovely, carry a wrong message) instead. Or a DVD. Or a trip to a natural history museum. Ahem.

A cutting garden is nice,many flowers have so many blooms that you can harvest some with out missing any.And if it's an annual,they die when it frosts anyhow.Some plant breeders name their creations after loved ones.Thats pretty cool.
Store bought flowers can be grown in chemical laden greenhouses where the workers can get exposed to all sorts of nasty stuff.

Possibly this means a squirting flower to smother and confuse the recipient. yes I don't adhere much to this but a bunch of blue and red and yellow roses from convent gardens may appeal very much. I don't like to ask for flowers, but it would be nice to get some.
