Is the phrase "maybe we could give it a try" a cliche? I see people say it in real life (as opposed to movies), and while the two people may or may not try being together, I don't know them in person, so I have no idea how it ends up. To me, that phrase seems like it would force whatever relationship that would (not) form, and even though I've never been with anyone, I know that being in a forced relationship with someone is never a good thing.

Any input?

I think it means they are uncertain but just willing to give it a shot.

Personally I rather doubt anyone in reality actually says out loud, "maybe we could give it a try."
Especially at the beginning of a relationship, though maybe in a rerun of a relationship.
People are probably too horny/nervous/thrilled at the beginning to say something as mundane and prosaic as, "maybe we could give it a try."

if you dont give it a try you wont know what would have been

With the presence of "maybe" i'd say it is, if they just said "let's give it a try" I'd say no.

Women love to use "maybe" to mean no.
