I was called metrosexual by some member here whom I won't name, while I don't perceive myself metrosexual at all nor been called that by anyone else but her.

So I was wondering, what's metrosexual for you and what's not? Illustrate with pics and descriptions.

I've heard it meant:

being neutral in gender

having a wide variety of sexual interests.

Guys who do a lot of grooming and use products that are traditionally feminine. Exfoliating, moisturizing, facial masks, deep conditioning the hair, waxing, shaving in other places besides the face, etc.

Closeted gay or closeted bisexual man who lives with a woman to keep mother off their case. Gets high when a new grooming product launches on QVC.

This is my understanding of "metrosexual," along with paying a great deal of attention to one's wardrobe. If you've seen the show, think of the Barney character on "How I Met Your Mother."

I was introduced to the term 6 or 7 years ago by a 20-something friend who lives in Boston, who referred to himself as a metrosexual. I had to ask for an explanation, and that is how he defined it. FWIW, he is now happily married.

I'm not personally attracted to the type, which is one of the reasons I live out here in the wild, wild west.

For me it means a man (or woman for that matter) who doesn't look at the world in a "some things are for men, other things for women" kind of way but decides for him/herself what they want to do, which products to use, which feelings to care about.

The term came about from the show "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy". That was where five gay guys would give a big makeover to a straight guy who needed help. The end result was supposed to be a straight guy with the grooming and culture skills of a gay guy. It had nothing whatsoever to do with sexuality actually, only with grooming, the inside of his house, the way he acted on dates, etc.

There was also a show that lasted only a season or two called "Straight Plan For The Gay Man" where some straight guys would butch up a gay guy. It was more humor than actual makeover, and they focused on a lot of stereotypes, but it was funny.

I liked both shows.

Weird, but I don't use any cosmetics, I don't wax or shave my body nor I wear too stylishly, yet this lady called me metrosexual.

Don't feel bad, Boo. Out here in the wild west, the terms "city slicker" (i.e., any man who wears a suit) and "metrosexual" are interchangeable. ;)

As others have posted, it has nothing to do with sexuality but image.

*warning: incoming stereotypes, used solely for illustration purposes*

If a guys spends more time grooming in the bathroom than his girlfriend, he might be a metrosexual.
If a guy dresses much more sharp than his girlfriend, he might be a metrosexual.
If a guy spends more time at Bed, Bath and Beyond than his girlfriend, he may be a metrosexual.
If you think a guy may be homosexual because of how he looks, dresses, and his taste, but he's always got a girlfriend then he may indeed be a metrosexual.

Or how about this one: A guy who isn't unmistakably masculine, but likely straight and probably not gay, and who cares about his appearance enough to comb his hair and wear clean unwrinkled clothing, is a metrosexual.
