I've decided that my wedding will be in Los Angeles, as I said many times before, and during the ceremony, I will have the American and Canadian anthems sung, as I mentioned above. This is not a dumb Q, bear in mind, but it is something I want at my wedding, when it comes up. Firstly, what should my guests do when the anthems are sung, and which one should be sung first, The Star-Spangled Banner or O Canada? Thanks. :)

I guess since it's your wedding, you get to decide in what order the anthems are sung. Most people automatically stand up.

Asked this on Yahoo Answers, and I got 10 responses, ranging from "I am at a total loss as to understand what sort of wedding it will be that requires the playing of national anthems at all other than a redneck, backwoods survivalist group in a trailer park.", "Frankly, singing national anthems at a wedding is *bizarre*."

But this I chose as the best answer:

Quote:
I believe you sing O Canada first followed by the Star spangled banner. Guests stand during the anthems. Elderly and sick people or those in wheel chairs are allowed to remain seated. People with canes or walkers may sit anytime they tire. Guests should face the flag if there is one. And guests may salute or place their hand over their heart or may just stand at attention. Some may sing along and that is okay as they are caught up in the patriotic spirit. Some may hum or even sway to the music or tap their fingers. Allow it as they are just being patriotic.

And my reason for singing the anthems: The ceremony will be at Dodger Stadium, and I wanted to bring the element of the big sporting event to the thing, hence the singing of them.

weddings are for the girl though. aren't you a guy?
if so you're wife to be will likely be the one deciding everything.

The custom is, in the US, Oh Canada gets sung first, and the Star Spangled Banner gets sung last. In Canada, the reverse is customary. There's no rule that I'm aware of, but that's how it's almost always done.

I'm more of the kind of person ho believes it should be for BOTH of us equally, so I beg to differ. And, yes, I am a guy.

No, but I will do that (having the Canadian anthem played) to show some love to the country.
