Making direct eye-contact is a sign of agression, or dominance at least, not something you'd do in a regular relationship.
This is one of these complex social conventions. Too much eye contact (such as a direct stare into someone's eyes) is considered undesirable as it looks aggressive, too little is also undesirable for the factors mentioned upthread.
It is difficult for people with AS to learn the "correct" amount of eye contact to make as it does not always come naturally.
