I went out for dinner this evening, and there were so many weddings going on around the churches I drove past. Ugh, the ostentation, the waste, the silliness of it all. I can think of few places I'd be less inclined to be than a goddamn wedding. All the couples flaunting their happiness, and all the single people made to look and feel miserable. I thank god I rarely go to these wretched exercises in excess.
A friend who has basically ignored me for the past year up and out of the blue sent me a wedding invite, no doubt so he could score a gift from me. Oh you mean I get to spend the better part of my day driving out to your ceremony, having to see you show off your happiness, and then I get to sit around at a table with a bunch of strangers, and get reminded that I'm single and don't have a date and don't have anyone to dance with, AND I get the privilege of giving you a gift too? Forget that. I'll be happy if I never go to another wedding in my life.
And dear god if I ever do find love and at last end the loneliness, you can bet I won't flaunt my good fortune. It will be a quiet, civil union without guests. A marriage is too personal, too private, to be flaunted the way so many do it. Ugh.
