I think it's all about previous bad experiences they went through. They were told by girls they are/look too young so they add a bigger number, or the opposite: girls rejected them because they thought he is too old for them.

First two: the same as mentioned above: guys very often criticize the appearance of women, I had many boyfriends who asked to wear makeup. Also I think it's partly of media and the models, actresses, singers shown in perfect shape or when you are in public, men only look at you when you look sexy (bra, deep cleavage, short skirt, tons of makeup). It's really a bad thing, but a vice versa trap between men and women.
"Be friends": just a guess: they are afraid to flat out reject a man to avoid conflict at that moment.
