On dating sites, I tend to get a lot of people who message me and they are nowhere near where I live. Some are hours away from me, others are in a different state, and some are even in another country. I even get people out of the state and country message me on Facebook wanting to be friends or date. Why would someone want a relationship with someone online? There is little chance that we would ever meet in person. Even if you like someone online, why not look for someone who is near you? I don't believe in long distance relationships especially if I've never met the person.

Some people can work with it, as some have had successful long distance relationships which bloomed into marriage. You sound like you're flexing, but whatever. I can assure you that your prefrence is strongly justified, especially if it takes a very long time to actually meet the person, so ultimately, it's best to arrange an in-person date ASAHP.

They are often fraudsters looking to string people along with a relationship forming chat and then once you start having feelings for them all of the sudden they disclose their financial problems to you in hopes that you'll offer to help or that they can ask you for a loan etc the whole thing is just a ruse to get you to send them money.

Maybe not if someone is like an hour or two drive away or whatever, but when they're way too far to easily meet, it's almost always a scam. Just ignore or block them.

There’s someone I know only online, whom she chats/calls me frequently, who has just confessed that she loves me; but she lives in Jordan.

Why?

My relationship with my wife began online. We didn't waste a lot of time with just text chat and started video chatting pretty quickly. We met in person a few times and 1 year later we were living together. People that care about each other find a way to meet up.

We use to live ~1400 mi/ 2250 km apart.

People want what they can't have. If she lived next door to you she might never talk to you. If you meet in person, Maybe she will like you, but Most likely she will realize she likes the idea of you as your long distance convos have created but in person there isn't the spark she thinks there is - as is the case with so many people who meet their long distance crushes. I've heard stories sfrom friends of these things happening.

Yes, hence why I hate that idea.

Something very similar happened to me. We were only about 364 miles/587 km apart. We were together 17 yrs.

Almost everyone I find interesting lives up to three hours' drive away (one hour seems typical but some are in Canada). It happens when one lives in a more rural area.

Distance doesn't matter unless one is dating just for something to do or doesn't have the means to travel.

My ex-wife and I met on Match.com while living 365mi/587km apart...met up for a few weekends...moved in together...married a couple years later (were together 17 yrs.).

I had also met someone while she was in Peru and I in New York. She moved to Switzerland and when I moved to England for university we met in Paris for the first time. We were together nearly every weekend and I moved in with her for the Summer. We're still in touch 20+ years later.

I'm just giving examples of when distance didn't matter and the relationships, given time to develop slowly, led to something significant. When being with someone doesn't require any demonstration of maturity or commitment, one can't be sure there's maturity or commitment.
